I know you said that you are joking but...
Actually, DRM-circumvention is NOT illegal under DMCA. It is the breaking/unencrypting of the DRM that is illegal.

Using DeCSS to decrypt a CSS-encrypted DVD = illegal (according to DMCA)

Using a DVD player connected to the input port of a video capture card to make a copy = not illegal.

This DIY project is analogous to the 2nd scenario.
