Sayers, Dorothy L: Why Work? v1, 17 February 2010.

Dorothy L. Sayers [1893–1957]
Why Work? [1942]
Originally given as a lecture in Eastbourne, April 1942 and later published in “Creed or Chaos?” 1949.

An essay in which Dorothy Sayers argues that we ought to rethink our ideas about work; and that the Church also needs a more nuanced position.

“The Church’s approach to an intelligent carpenter is usually confined to exhorting him not to be drunk and disorderly in his leisure hours, and to come to church on Sundays. What the Church should be telling him is this: that the very first demand that his religion makes upon him is that he should make good tables.”

I've heard that said in regard to persuading people to join your political party or church or other such group.
