I use my various groups on Goodreads. That is a treasure trove of book recommendations by people that enjoy the same kinds of books as I do.

I mainly find books the old-fashioned way - browsing in libraries, both physical and virtual. I also look at this forum and goodreads (not a member though) and a couple of genre-specific sites that do reviews. |

For science fiction books I listen to pod casts talking about books and I also try to read books that are short listed for awards and books that are discussed in the field.

I like to change genres between books, so I will read a non-fic after a sci-fi and then maybe a fantasy... I have my collection of favorite sites and authors, then I will tell the local library for anything new, the occasional recommendation on a forum such as this one, always liking at ebook deals and sales, humble bundles, and recommendations on sites like io9 and geeksaresexy...

Now, if you are asking how I decided on what books to buy (my to-be-read list is pretty long), then it's a combination of new books by authors I already know, older books that I read as dead-tree books that I found as ebooks, and recommendations that I see in various online forums such as this. For example, I just finished the first of the Alex Verus books and pre-ordered the new omnibus Alex Verus ebook that will be coming out in a month or so based on reading about it in the infinite Jim Butcher thread. Several years ago, I would also browse the new books sections at the book stores, but I haven't been to a brick and mortar bookstore in a while and find wading through the pages and pages and pages of indie authors, porn and PD books at Amazon tedious. I do it every so often, and sometimes find some new ebook that way (that's how I found that Glenn Cook's Dark Company books were finally in ebook), but anyone who comes out with an author alert for ebooks that is accurate will get my business. |
