Can I offer KF8 only files?
Hi all
Got a question about a title we are investigating. The print job relies heavily on colour images and some design features that means it seems a bit pointless putting on old Kindle devices. The time involved wouldn't be worth it (IMHO). However it would fine on Kindle Fire etc using KF8 files. I know it is possible to unpack a .mobi file and separate out the old mobi and new KF8 files - is there anything stopping us offering the KF8 file for download, specifying that it is for colour Kindle devices only (which are obviously all KF8 compatible)? The file won't be selling on Amazon, it would be downloaded from either the client's website or ours. thanks, Iain |

If it's your own site you can sell whatever you want. I'd suggest using Calibre to convert your book to AZW3 (KF8) format and sell that.

Thanks Harry. Did you mean take a .mobi file from Kindlegen and use Calibre to split the file only or to use Calibre to create the Kindle file in the first place?
The file originates in QuarkXPress and I was planning on outputting to ePUB (required by the client) and then probably swapping the CSS file over and running through Kindlegen. |

Create the ePub, then use Calibre to convert the ePub to KF8, which Calibre calls "AZW3".

Thanks, I'll have a look. Never really used Calibre before, although obviously I'm aware of it. I know Amazon prefer you to use Kindlegen but as we won't be selling the file on Amazon it doesn't concern them.
thanks |

Precisely! I've converted literally hundreds of books from ePub to KF8 using Calibre. Works extremely well.

Alternatively, use Kindlegen plus kindlestrip script.
But I would consider the following: - people with older Kindles (DX, K2, K1) will not be able to use it - Kindle for iOS probably won't like it - It cannot be sent to Personal Documents service It should be possible to design media queries that basically create a 'stub' mobi segment that just says "this ebook requires KF8 support" so that PDS would be happy to store and deliver it. That would at least take care of the last of the problems, which would be the most serious for people who want to store it in their Kindle cloud and have wireless download from there. |

However, further tests with older Kindles and the latest generation of eInk Kindles and tablets couldn't hurt. |

Keep in mind that I don't think you're technically permitted (by kindlegen ToS) to sell ebooks created with Kindlegen anywhere other than Amazon.

That's why I suggested using Calibre.

That's interesting - I had no idea there was any such restriction.
