Free/Bargain Suspense/Mystery/Thriller December 2012

Everyone welcome to post their finds here. Please do a search before posting to avoid duplication, and please try not to post self-pubs. Thanks.

Books listed in my posts are from Amazon US unless otherwise indicated.

And She Was by Alison Gaylin is $.99 from HarperCollins. Also $.99 at B&N.

Quote:
On a summer afternoon in 1998, six-year-old Iris Neff walked away from a barbecue in her small suburban town . . . and vanished.

Missing persons investigator Brenna Spector has a rare neurological disorder that enables her to recall every detail of every day of her life. A blessing and a curse, it began in childhood, when her older sister stepped into a strange car never to be seen again, and it’s proven invaluable in her work. But it hasn’t helped her solve the mystery that haunts her above all others—and it didn’t lead her to little Iris. When a local woman, Carol Wentz, disappears eleven years later, Brenna uncovers bizarre connections between the missing woman, the long-gone little girl . . . and herself.

Free thriller from Medallion Press - The Tenth Saint: Book One (Sarah Weston Chronicles) by D.J. Niko.

Quote:
Cambridge archaeologist Sarah Weston makes an unusual discovery in the ancient Ethiopian mountain kingdom of Aksum—a sealed tomb with inscriptions in an obscure dialect. Along with her colleague, American anthropologist Daniel Madigan, she tries to identify the entombed man and translate the inscriptions. Tracking down clues in Addis Ababa and the monasteries of Lalibela, Sarah and Daniel uncover a codex in the subterranean library revealing the secret of the tomb—a set of prophecies about Earth’s final hours, written by a man hailed by Ethiopian mystics as Coptic Christianity’s 10th saint. Faced with violent opposition and left for dead in the heart of the Simien Mountains, Sarah and Daniel survive to journey to Paris, where they’re given a 14th-century letter describing the catastrophic events that will lead to the planet’s demise. Connecting the two discoveries, Sarah faces a deadly conspiracy to keep the secret buried in order to promote technological advances presently leading toward the prophesied end of the Earth.

Cozy mystery from HarperCollins for $.99 - To Have and To Kill: A Wedding Cake Mystery by Mary Jane Clark. Also at B&N.

Quote:
New York Times bestselling author Mary Jane Clark delights readers with her tasty new mystery To Have and to Kill.

Piper Donovan never imagined that decorating wedding cakes could be so dangerous! A struggling actress with no immediate prospects and a recently broken engagement, Piper moves back in with her parents to take stock of her life. She steps tentatively into the family bakery business and finds herself agreeing to create a wedding cake for the acclaimed star of a daytime television drama. But soon someone close to the bride-to-be is horribly murdered and it seems that that someone is ruthlessly determined to stop the wedding.

With the help of her former neighbor, Jack, a handsome FBI agent with a soft spot for the gorgeous cake-maker, Piper moves closer to the truth. And as she narrows in on a suspect, she realizes that it's hotter in the kitchen than she may be able to handle. . . .

The December '100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less' list includes some popular authors, some of the books were mentioned last month as their prices dropped earlier this week. I noticed Agatha Christie, Peter Robinson, Dennis Lehane, and Robert B. Parker in the Mystery/Thriller section.

This is worth a look, especially at this price. It's fast-moving and interesting enough that you can overlook some improbabilities.

Good to know, CL.

The Julie Collins Series: Books 1-4 by Lori Armstrong is $9.99 from Medallion Press.

Quote:
Julie Collins is stuck in a dead-end secretarial job with the Bear Butte County Sheriff’s office and still grieving over the unsolved murder of her Lakota half brother. Lack of public interest in finding his murderer or the killer of several other transient Native American men has left Julie with a bone-deep cynicism she counters with tequila, cigarettes, and dangerous men. The one bright spot in her mundane life is the time she spends working part-time as a PI with her childhood friend Kevin Wells. Over time, she’s drawn into murder cases, works undercover in a strip club, comes face-to-face with her brother’s killer, and is forced to wrestle with issues that make her question old wounds and new family loyalties. Follow Julie Collins’ thrilling journey in this four-book bundle from Shamus Award–nominated author Lori G. Armstrong.

Repeat free mystery Akitada and the Way of Justice (Akitada Stories) by I.J. Parker.

Quote:
Eleven stories about crime and detection in eleventh century Japan are arranged chronologically for Sugawara Akitada’s career. They include diverse cases with clues from moon cakes and Chinese lutes to feral cats and incense competitions and feature traditional holidays of the period.

A Sick Work of Art by Claire Lewis is free from Wild Wolf Publishing.

Quote:
Performance artist Winston Braun intentionally kills a volunteer during the making of a piece. He is swiftly arrested, but not before a video of his gruesome work finds its way onto the internet.
The shocking video is viewed accidentally by Maxie, a 24-yearold woman living alone in Newcastle. Through her job in the coffee shop of an art gallery, Maxie is introduced to an acquaintance of Winston Braun's and finds herself drawn into a sinister circle of strange and mysterious individuals.

Events spiral out of control, heading towards a horrifying finale. In order to escape, Maxie must search deep into the dark undercurrents of her home and of the people around her.

It doesn't show up as free for me. Probably it is georestricted or it is free only for Amazon Prime members.

However "The Masuda Affair" from the Akitada series is free currently.

December Dread, the latest entry in Jess Lourey's Murder-By-Month Mysteries, is available at Amazon US for $1.99. I did a search on eReaderIQ and it looks like the previous price was $9.99.

Hmm, I downloaded that, and it seems to be a duplicate for me. It must have been reissued with a new ASIN. I often rely on Amazon to tell me whether I already own a book in a frequent-freebie series, but that doesn't seem to be accurate enough for the Akitada books any more.

I was recently spot-checking my Amazon library, and I'd estimate at least 5%, maybe closer to 10% of the books I checked no longer showed the 'You have already bought this' banner, presumably due to being replaced with new editions.

I usually ignore the trad pub short story teases, but this one's from one of my all-time favorite series - Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway...plus, it's free... (on Amazon)

Ruth's First Christmas

It is three days before Christmas and a bitter wind is blowing across Norfolk.

Until her daughter was born, forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway didn’t do Christmas, but now that Kate is a year old, she wants it to be special.

She must get a tree, shop for food, clean the house, buy presents, including one for her new boyfriend—who she isn’t even sure is her boyfriend—and remember to get the turkey out of the freezer.

But time is rushing by and the best-laid plans don’t always work out …
