Ideal e-reader for academic use - post your suggestions!
Hi everyone, I teach at university and I have to read lots of papers, thesis, etc. on pdf. I have a Kindle 3 which is great for literature, but I need something for work. I tried the Kindle DX for some time, I thought about an ipad, but I'm not satisfied.
I would like to hear your suggestios - if possible within the realm of the possible today or soon. Think about it as market research for an OEM that might read this in Taiwan or Shenzen... My points are: -E ink is great for literature, but I can cope with LCD for a 30/40 pages paper. -9.7 inches is too SMALL for full page A4 or letter publications -I need to annotate - not with a keyboard, I need to underline, mark, write comments, etc. The ideal would then be a 12 inch ipad with iannotate, but this is not going to happen. I am settling for a 11.6 inch Android tablet with LCD. Does this sound right? The Asus tablet has failed to materialize. Does a device like this exist? Thanks! |

For me, the iPad with iannotate is just right. Turn it sideways and you get a good sized zoom on a pdf. Of course it doesn't display the entire page top-to-bottom, but that is why the LCD/touch screen is important. It lets you touch and drag the page around to read it and it really doesn't seem like your viewing area is limited. With an e-ink you would have to flash and refresh to move things on the screen.
I still prefer my Kindle for fiction, but the iPad wins for academic papers. |

Hi
If you can cope with the weight (around 2 kilos), I advise you to try a 12” tabletpc like the Toshiba Protégé M750 (http://www.mobiletechreview.com/note...rtege-M750.htm) or the Fujitsu Lifebook T900 (http://ts.fujitsu.com/products/mobil...book_t900.html), with per example PDF Annotator (http://www.ograhl.com/en/pdfannotator/). Ha… and it doubles as the rest of every day’s computer necessities. Best regards, |
