PDF printer driver

When I used to do design for print I had a printer driver that would save a PDF as a print ready file I could take to the local printers. I thought it was something that came with Pagemaker, but when I dug out the disks and borrowed a floppy disk drive to install it there was no option for a PDF driver. Does anyone know what program it might have come with? This would have been mid to late 90s.

My guess is that you're talking about Acrobat Distiller that comes with Adobe Acrobat.

For a free alternative, look at PDF Creator . It's open source and completely free, unlike some of the others which are shareware or nagware.

Certainly Distiller is not a printer driver. There are many of those and many are free but they provide no intelligence to the PDF document. No TOC for example or adding tags for intelligent reflow that can even reflow past a page boundary. Adobe Distiller is available with Acrobat but is also used and a part of Framemaker and I suspect InDesign.

PDF Creator is more like a print driver, not particularly intelligent.

I didn't mean to suggest that it's the best way to create PDFs; far from it. PDF printer drivers just happen to be the topic of the thread.

And Distiller can work as a printer driver.

Just take the PDF to your local printers. They'll scale it, warp it for you, etc. It's their job.

I don't really need any of that stuff, that will be handled by Pagemaker along with the imposition. In fact having the text reflow would be very bad because it would mess up my page breaks. It's for print rather than screen display, so some pages will be upside down.

Wasn't Pagemaker part of that really old Office suite like Office 2000 (or maybe 2003) ? Who uses Pagemaker anymore ? Microsoft dropped support for it a long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away. It's an abandoned project.

Are you using Windows 98 by any chance ?

It would have been Win95 at the time, or maybe even 3.1, but Pagemaker was by Aldus, not Microsoft. Adobe bought it, so it's probably called something else now. If something works, and does everything you need it to do, why waste money on newer versions that just run slower than the old one?

Pagemaker was discontinued as a product, and InDesign took it's place eventually.
