Heartfire - Orson Scott Card

The fifth book in the series. One more to go -- and supposedly one more yet to be written/published. I think Card really upped his game in this book. It was fantastic and thrilling to read.

Among other things -- this book takes us to Cards version of the Salem with trials. Verily Cooper -- Alvin's lawyer friend and fellow traveler, has a brilliant scene as he takes on the witcher (prosecutor of witches) with John Adams as the judge. The witcher is truly evil. Card's portrayal of this "inquisition" is just amazing. They way this guy turns every innocent utterance into proof of Satanism...it's just brilliant dialog.

We are also once again taken to the world of slavery. We see a world where slaves hand their "real names", their hurt and their anger in black magic tokens to be kept away from their bodies while they endure the depredations of slavery. Peggy (forgot to mention they get married at the end of the last book) is working hard to find a way to bring emancipation of the slaves without starting a war.

Calvin is back in America with a French author, Balzac. I went and looked up Balzac in wikipedia. Card has done a wonderful job weaving his alternate history into this fantasy series. Peggy continues to worry about Calvin killing Alvin -- and there is quite the scene as they both meet together in the land of slavery.

A riveting book and a fitting member of a wonderful series.
