Because that's what they object to, right.

It may very well be. We're talking about a very rich/powerful industry who's main source of power is in having a virtual monopoly on distribution. Which is a bigger threat, people sharing individual files, or artists and consumers realizing that the industry gatekeepers are no longer necessary.

Some believe that the main reason filesharing is being targeted is not because of piracy, but to eliminate competition.

That's why they crushed the many much more high profile sites for legally sharing material? Oh, they didn't.

They aren't trying to stop you giving away your IP for free. They are trying to stop you giving away their IP for free.

And IP that's not theirs, if it happens to look somewhat like theirs and be stored or listed near it. Like the SFWA's takedown notice to Scribd that included content by authors not in the SFWA, and content that the SFWA hadn't been authorized to control (like Doctorow's ebooks), the RIAA's takedown notices have included claims on content they don't have the rights for, and claims on content that involves fair use.

It's been established that fair use isn't just a defense usable in courts; rights holders have to consider it when issuing notices. Unless, of course, the rights holder has so much more money than the people getting notified that there's no chance of them filing a claim for falsification of a DMCA report.

Probably not, a month wouldn't really be long enough to get the job done (though the Mega takedown was certainly rushed, which is why they bodged it so badly).

But look at all the hatred directed towards Amazon by the big book publishers because they let writers bypass them and publish their own ebooks. And when Amazon announced their "cloud" service one musician said it was like legalised murder.

Corporations don't like competition, and they will use any means they can to squash it. Do something a bit dodgy in one of your other business interests and all you do is make it easy for them.
