Classic What do Nook firmware variations 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.4.3 mean?

OK, I am seeing reports of the refurb units coming in with very old serial numbers, in the 10008 series well before the hardware change at 10031. The problem is that some are 1.4.0 firmware, which is to be expected in a reconditioned nook, but others are firmware 1.4.3, which if the series holds true, is the type that would be expected on the brand new models with the hardware change removing the internal SD socket.

So, does anyone have any reliable info on what the 1.4.1, 1.4.2, and 1.4.3 variations actually mean? I have assumed that these meant not softrootable (easy method) but now I am not sure. Plus with the serial numbers all out of whack, how will we be able to identify these things after everyone goes to 1.5, short of dis-assembly?

1.4.1 and above contains drivers required for the new hardware. Nothing more. If a nook ships with 1.4.1 or above, it is not compatible to older firmware versions and therefore the easy softrooting method isn't an option. If a nook runs 1.4, it's a model with the original (better, more expensive) hardware and it's compatible with the stock 1.0 firmware and therefore it's possible to use the easy softrooting method. At the moment, the serial number is absolutely irrelevant (changes when 1.5 is installed...).

So an old nook with S/N 10008 with 1.4.3 firmware has the new chip, even though based on the serial, it looks 6 months old?

Two weeks ago i received my nook with fw 1.4.3 and i was able to root it...

You can't rely on the serial, cause the nooks are build by different suppliers. I own to nooks, both delivered the same day, one with black inner case, one with grey inner case, both units with completely different serials.

If there's a firmware 1.4.1 or above on the unit: don't use the easy softrooting method. Currently this newer firmware isn't supplied to nooks with the old hardware, perhaps it isn't even compatible with the older nooks. Refurbished units with the old hardware are still shipped with 1.4.

I used the Rooting new hardware No router method.
