Unicode Font support without flashing

Anyone test it out yet? I'm sure it's fine but would love to hear a confirmation with "yes i did it and it worked." I'm mostly waiting to hear how battery life was affected at this point, since for the moment i don't need pdf or epub support.

Hi all! Im newbie, just've got new 505 yesterday :-)
This thread figures out that I have to create a unicode for my own? I've english and russian in my device, now I want to add Vietnamese and Chinese fonts, can I take these from somewhere?

Use Fontcreator software to customize fonts.

For anyone still using the patch, if you can fit a font into the flasher image, it's better to use the Universal Flasher 2.0 to load your custom fonts than this patch. While this patch was a godsend before the new firmware, it's obsoleted (for the most part) by the Flasher. With the flasher, you no longer have to reset the Reader (and thereby lose all your bookmarks) before adding new files to your Reader, nor do you lose your custom fonts every time you turn off the Reader. However, there is a file size limit.. from my experience, your font file has to be less than 2150kb or so, and you can only fit as many font files as you can if they add up to less than 2150kb. You can get around this problem in a number of ways, such as editing the main.xml file in the universal Flasher and replacing all mention of different fonts such as Swis721 BT and Courier**** with Dutch801Rm BT and just placing your new custom font, tt0011m_.ttf into the FONT folder on the Flasher.. which means all your text will be rendered using that font.

There are ways to get around this size limit, but even the detailed explanation from experts went over my head, so this is the method I personally use. It's great.

Chinese fonts can be found on hi-pda's forums. Not too sure about viet fonts, i reckon u gotta create the fonts yourself. Chinese fonts will NOT be flashable due to the large size of the fonts themselves (approx 6mb for each font)

Hi Shousa,
I considered changing the fonts, but have not bothered since I find PDF does an acceptable job as long as you embed the font or convert to images.

In the past (prior to the firmware upgrade) the problem was that after about 40 pages of Japanese text the entire document would become blank. I have not experienced this since the recent upgrade, but have only performed limited tests.

My current process is (using Aozora texts with some rubi) to open the file on my Mac with BlueSkyReader which rendered the text nicely. I resize the window to the size of the reader screen and then output to HTML. This creates individual GIFs which I then just "print" to PDF and copy over to the PRS505.

I have tried to create some permanent method of installing customized fonts, with help the the Unitversal Reflasher.

Here is the Usage:

a. Install
1. In your Reader's internal memory disk, create the /FONT folder, as described in the begining of this thread
2. In your Reader's internal memory disk, create a /scripts folder, and unzip the scripts.zip into it. After that, you should have a tinyhttp_custom.sh file in that folder
3. extract the ReplaceTinyhttp.sh.zip to a SD card
4. follow the Universal Flasher's readme.txt to create and flash the new image (i.e. key 5. followed by key 6.)

After reader reboot, the new fonts in /FONT folder will be activated.

b. To revert back to original fonts, simply rename the /scripts/tinyhttp_custom.sh to a /scripts/tinyhttp_custom.sh.dis and reboot your reader (shutdown and power on again).

c. To change the fonts, you need to do b. to saftly umount the /FONT. Then you can copy the new fonts into the /FONT folder, and change back the /scripts/tinyhttp_custom.sh name. After reboot, the new fonts will be activated.

I have attached the packages here:

ReplaceTinyhttp.sh.zip: Basically a Universal Flasher, that will install the modified tinyhttp.sh

scripts.zip: the customized script to be called by the new tinyhtpp.sh

NOTE: changing tinyhttp.sh is risky, that may cause your unit to a deep brick if anything went wrong.

When that happened, the USB might not enumerate.

To recover from such condition, please follow "Recovering From Catastrophic Failure (Unbricking)" in this post:

This hack bascially installed a "hook" into the tinyhttp.sh. That would allow user script to run before the tinyhttp application (i.e. the main UI of the reader software).

To install a user script, you just need to ensure the script is stored at "scripts" folder in the reader's internal disk.
The name of the script need to be exactly "tinyhttp_custom.sh"

When this script runs, tinyhttp.sh mounted the internal disk at /tmp/Data, so your script can use that path to access the files in that disk.

My experiment shows that "/Data" is not mounted outside the tinyhttp application. So /tmp/Data would be handy to access the user files.

Have you followed the steps exactly?

Have you done the ReplaceTinyhttp.sh.zip?

Are the folders created correctly in you reader's internal disk (not SD card!)

\FONT: the 3 ttf files, (see the begining of the thread of where to get them)
\scripts\tinyhttp_custom.sh

You need to reboot your reader to get it activated: (Settings->Advanced Settings->Device Shutdonw to shutdown the reader. After that, use the power switch to turn it on again)

After reboot the reader, if it still not working, please post the \scripts\tinyhttp_custom.log file here, so we can see what's wrong.

I think I've done all the steps:
1. internal memory \FONT, then
2. internal memory \scripts\tinyhttp_custom.sh, then,
3. unzip ReplaceTinyhttp.sh.zip into SD, then flash the image (option 5, 6. I got a successful flashing message and then 9 to reboot).
4. insert another SD with chinese fonts lrf but only display squares.

I can't find \scripts\tinyhttp_custom.log file in the internal menory, so, the reader didn't run the custom script after rebooting?
PS: I use a 8GB SD to flash the reader.
