Plenty more, and newer, out there.

I like the term: vertical seats.
What they need is to go with triple-bunk beds, like the Japanese capsule hotels.

Just happened to fly to Miami and back this week. On the flight down, there was no mention of any policy change, on the flight back, they announced the change and told everyone they could ignore the "put all devices away" recorded announcement. It was nice. Off to SF next week.

From the article:

Quote:
Before an airline switches to the relaxed rules, it will have to prove to the FAA that its aircraft can tolerate the interference. Airlines have, over the years, built newer planes with portable electronics in mind, hardening them against electromagnetic interference.
Emphasis mine.

BTW, again. I'm currently in San Francisco via Virgin America and, as of yesterday, they had not changed their policy. Still no devices allowed. Someone told me they saw a news article on why.

The idea is spreading:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-576...entire-flight/

Quote:
On Wednesday, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said it will publish guidance this month that will allow the use of smartphones, tablets, e-readers and MP3 players from takeoff to landing as long as they're in flight mode or airplane mode. Current EASA guidelines prohibit the use of such devices during taxiing, takeoff, and landing.
The new recommendations will apply to planes operated by European airlines. As a next step, EASA is investigating ways to allow mobile phone users to make phone calls while onboard the plane.

And doesn't it seem you never get to sit next to the "listener" in the conversation - it's always the one talking a mile-a-minute nonstop for the entire time. I never seem to find those folks who are just listening and throwing in an occasional "mm-hmmm", "yep".

If he/she is talking loud enough to be heard, then you were obviously meant to be part of the conversation. Look directly at the person talking and stop him/her every now and then by asking pertinent questions. As long as he/she keeps talking, you keep staring and asking questions.

No one promised you silence. Whether they are talking on a phone or to the family member sitting next to them, it is not reasonable to expect not to hear them if you are sitting next to someone. Of course, there is audible, and then there is inconsideratly loud....

If I can make out what's being said, then it's too loud.

Since this person is kind enough to include me in his/her conversation, then it's only proper for me to return the favor and share my music (at the same volume level). AC/DC does wonders for frayed nerves.

When it is you hauled off the plane by airport police for causing a disturbance, you might find that that your definition of "too loud" does not meet the reasonable person standard.

What disturbance? I know how to push the envelop and when to pull back.
