Google indexes the mobile web

Google Search For Tiny Screens from InternetNews.com reports on Google releasing a new beta service for mobile web searchers allowing you to search an index of pages that have been optimized for mobile devices with small screens.

Quote:
Google does a special Web crawl to create a separate index of XHTML pages, Nishar [director of wireless product management for Google] said; he wouldn't disclose how many pages were in the Mobile Web index, but said, "Many sites are using formats that are more conducive to a better user experience on mobile devices."
If you host a mobile site you can try to submit it here.

Nice service. It's the forward-thinking companies who position themselves to succeed that end up doing so. Even though my PDA doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi, and I'm against browsing on my phone, this mobile web browsing thing just is not going to go away but rather will continue to improve the user experience. Services like this will only accelerate that growth.

It'd be a shame if they do decide to incorporate ads in the search results, but these things do have to pay for themselves somehow. It's a no-win situation for us users, however; if the service does poorly, they'll justify ads to keep the service operational and if the service does do well, the ad revenue will prove irrestible.
