LG buys webOS from HP

Quote:
LG has just announced that it has acquired the much-troubled webOS from HP. But instead of using it to power smartphones or tablets, it's planning to roll out smart TVs which will make use of the OS.

The deal will see LG take control of the source code for webOS, along with "related documentation, engineering talent, and related webOS websites." It also gets licenses from HP for use with its WebOS products, along with a slew of patents HP obtained from Palm. There's no word on how much the deal was worth.
  • Jan 2009 -- Palm launches webOS (replacing Palm OS)
  • Apr 2010 -- HP buys webOS (& Palm)
  • Aug 2011 -- HP essentially kills off webOS (TouchPad slashed to $99)
  • Feb 2013 -- LG buys webOS (for use in TV's)
Hooray; webOS lives on ...in a TV

I wonder where that leaves the open source webOS project and Gram (the company HP split off to manage webOS.)

Another report:

You may want to keep a close eye on any smart TVs you get in future in case they start telling stories out of school.

Hmm. Maybe webOS will get a new update and maybe be a player in the smartphone world again.

Didn't HP promise to make WebOS open source?

For what it is worth, I have a LG phone right now.
Seems pretty good and never a problem.

I wouldn't have thought personally that the choice of firmware was likely to significantly lower the price of a TV - surely the overwhelming majority of the cost is the actual screen, isn't it?

It was a joke, based on HP slashing the price of the TouchPad from $499 to $99 after that webOS tablet failed in the marketplace.

Yep; that's the problem. Lack of content makes it pretty much worthless.

But it's great for embedded systems (such as TVs) which is the way that LG's going to use it.
