A die hard paper book reader exploring e-reading

Hello to all,

I am a book lover as much as I love reading. Lately I am also into long distance walking, carrying all I need in my backpack; and I find it now simply not possible to carry books on my journeys. Hence I am exploring e-reading. I believe this creature of habit can adapt

I have no device as yet. I reside in Spore and have no access to Kindle, so I am still exploring which device would be most suitable for my needs. I suppose my primary priority would be a compact device I can load eBooks/eArticles on to, and be able to read on-the-go.

Have a lovely week ahead,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca, welcome to MR. Have you had a look at the wiki pages that compare the different devices - it certainly helped me when I was deciding which ereader to get.

Hi Rebecca and welcome to MobileRead.

I have a Sony reader and buy books from Kobo because as soon as you buy a book from them for your Sony it also automatically downloads to your iPhone. That way you have a very portable copy.

Hya Rebecca: I was a paperbookworm for near as dammit sixty years ... now an absolute ebook convert. Good luck (check out the *which one should I buy?* thread). Best wishes and thanks for your new company. Neil

Spore, Ohio, USA? In which case I'm not sure why you don't have access to Kindle.

As for a compact device you can load things onto and read on-the-go, I think you have three options.

(1) Your mobile phone. If you have a smartphone, you might well find that there's ebook reading software available for it.
(2) iPod Touch. The new iPod touch makes a splendid ultra-portable ebook reader (although battery life isn't wonderful if going off on long weekends).
(3) Some kind of eInk device. Since portability is one of your main concerns, I'd suggest looking at the various 5" ebook readers that are available. The new Sony Pocket edition Reader looks very nice, and uses the newest kind of eInk screen.

welcome fellow book lover it is very difficult to give up paper books, but I find the more ebooks I read, they become just as cherished as their printed cousins.

@pdurrant - Spore as in Singapore :-) A city state and an island one can cycle around in a few hours. Despite being one of the most wired country in the world, Kindle is not available here. However, I believe there are ways around this.

Not much of a gadget person. Do not have an iPod touch. Have a HTC for a mobile, running Microsoft. Will check out if it supports ebook reading. Will also explore the Sony option.

Thanks a bunch for the suggestions.

Best regards
Rebecca

If your phone runs Windows Mobile, perhaps the Mobipocket software will run on it.

Welcome Rebecca!

Is the Chinese Dr. Yi available in Singapore? If so, perhaps its clones the jetBook (and the jetBook Lite) and the Aluratek Libre are worth looking into.

Hi all, I've been reading books for a while via Stanza on my iTouch and have decided I need something bigger. With a longer lasting battery. Am lurking here to explore my options.
