Intel introduces a digital book reader that reads aloud to the blind

Maybe not entirely appropriate for this group, but some may find it interesting.

Intel introduces a digital book reader that reads aloud to the blind

Quote:
Ben Foss grew up with dyslexia, a visual impairment so severe that his mother had to read books to him throughout his school years, all the way through college. Now 36, he is spearheading the launch of a remarkable device from Intel that can read electronic books aloud to the blind or visually impaired.

The Intel Reader is available today for $1,499.That’s a pretty hefty price, considering that devices like the $259 Amazon Kindle can read books aloud in a robotic voice. But the Intel Reader is based on a lot of research and is designed for the visually impaired, first and foremost.

It certainly does a lot more than the Kindle. I built a Wiki page for it. Intel Reader. It not only does TTS but also reads DAISY formatted eBooks and includes a camera with built in OCR. The output can be magnified or fed to TTS.

... but but. All those paper books were sold without the "TTS right". Where was the Author's Guild and their soap box when Intel announced this?

Surely they can only allow the TTS on paper books where the publisher allows them to do so.

My Uncle is a Veitnam Vet and he has something like one of these. I know he doesn't use all the features available but he loves it and would be lost without it. He can also use it with his computer. He can go through a couple books a week. He said it is amazing how far the technology has come since the old books on tape he used to get from VA.

Actually they don't support any eBook formats except TXT so this is not a problem for them. DAISY is a format specifically aimed at this market so it is ok. For more information see:

I understood that it does an OCR from the photo of a page and uses TTS to read it.

Quote:
Intel Corp. today started selling a new e-reader that can snap pictures of books and newspapers and then read them back to people who have a hard time reading the printed page.

Hate to be a pedant, but dyslexia is a learning disorder not a visual impairment. That being said, something like this would be awesome for my brother who has dyslexia and as much as possible used the audiobook versions of his college textbooks (when available).
