Jolicloud's 'Joli OS' to Feature iPad Support, Android Coming Soon

Jolicloud announced Monday that it will release the next version of its cloud-based operating system in the coming days, and expand support to new browsers and devices.

The company has also re-branded its OS as Joli OS, while its Web app will be known as Jolicloud.

"Back in December, we introduced a Web only version of Jolicloud for the Chrome Web Store. That app has already reached 60,000 installs and is now among the top 40 most popular apps," Jolicloud wrote in a blog post. "This success has convinced us that we now have to expand our experience beyond our own OS to be relevant on other platforms."

Version 1.2 will be released later this week. The operating system portion is built on Google's Chromium program, which was featured in the Chrome OS Cr-48 Notebook. So for those of you that weren't graced with a special delivery of one of Google's funky boxes, you can install this alternative OS on your computer and get the same experience, provided it has at least 384MB of memory.

The Jolicloud Web app, meanwhile, will soon be compatible with Firefox 4 and Safari 5. There will also be iPad support "as an experimental HTML5 port," while Android support will be available in the future.

Jolicloud released images (below) showing off the latest updates and features that 1.2 will offer. Some of the highlights include a Guest Mode, new way to browse through local and external files, automatic login, and performance improvements.
