Alexander, Joseph: Closing In-Marines in the Seizure of Iwo Jima.v1.19 Jan 2013
This book details the role of the US Marine Corps in the capture of Iwo Jima during World War II. The conflict was short being just slightly over a month. During that month, approximately 22,000 Japanese sailors and solidiers died. The United States suffered over 24,000 casualties with over 6,000 dead.
This all took place on an island only 8 square miles (21 sq km) in area. The US Marines worked primarily above the ground, while the Japanese worked underground in a network of caves they had constructed during its occupation. This book is part of a commemorative series of battles during World War II and as a US government document is in the public domain. The book is profusely illustrated with pictures and maps.
