To Root or Not to Root??

Would someone please explain to me the benefits of rooting my Nook Color?

Thanks, Kathy

Rooting the Nook essentially enables to install some apps from Google Playstore that are not available from BN app store; it also enables you to customize the Nook's user-interface more like with typical android tablets.

Rooting does not alter the release version of the base Android OS used by the NC, which is 2.x and quite dated by now (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history), hence there is a good chance that many recent or new apps from the Google Playstore would not be backward compatible to run on it.

If you want experience a full Android experience on your NC, consider running a custom ROM such as CyanogenMod off an SD card (hence leaving your NC internal stock ROM intact), see http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1941858 for some how-to info/pointers.

Thanks for the response..... I just want to clear away the stuff that I'll never use, and have more room for books.
Again, Thanks
Kathy

All I need is a reader. no internet purchasing, no email, not even B&N for that matter.
Is there some way to get rid of all the "Bells & Whistles" and strip away most, if not all of the stuff that I don't want, and just keep what is necessary??

I side-load all our books, and have never purchased a book from B&N in the entire time I have owned all three nooks we have (1 color 2 touch for our kids home schooling books).

The older Nook models including your NC have separate storage partitions for apps and user media content (e.g., books, music, videos, etc.). Even if you can remove unused stock ROM apps it won't help freeing up space for more media content. Some XDA developers have created a method to resize these partitions to yield more space for user media content, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1094371 -- it requires great care in execution as mistakes can permanently brick your NC.
