He is saying that up to 3.5 million of the phones reported sold were not actually sold to consumers, rather they are still in channel inventory.
In other words, Apple sold and shipped the phones to resellers, but resellers have not sold all the phones yet to consumers. Their conclusions appear to be based on pure speculation. |

Wouldn't there have been devices in channel inventory in the previous releases as well? |

But again, it's pure speculation. |

No, because in previous years the old model continued to be sold, albeit at a discount, so the channel was already full. Now we have a new model introduced so, according to some people, some of the "sold" devices are not actually sold, but simply shipped to stores as inventory.

because in the past they kept the same exact phone in the same wrapper. so when they shipped those to the stores it didnt count towards the "new sales record" count. this time they gave the 5 new clothes. shipping those 5c's to fill stores in place of the 5 in old clothes gets counted as part of that launch weekend sales total even though its just doing the same thing last years old model did- filling space.

In my market, the 5Cs are selling, at least at Verizon, T-Mobile and Apple. For the last three days, you couldn't find a yellow or pink in either size, and blue was sold out in the 16GB. White seems to be the only model everyone had in stock. Apple has green in both sizes. Same with the weird holey cases - totally out of certain colors.
Apple got a new shipment today and I snagged a pink/coral one. Liking the feel in hand. Too soon to say on iOS7 - I'm not fully set up yet. Also - little known detail unless you frequent phone boards - the Verizon 5c, bought as device only (no plan), is unlocked for use on Verizon AND the GSM carriers. Mine's running on T Mobile right now. Just needed to supply a live nano SIM from T Mobile. |
