An excellent example of how to sound impartial while not even being close to impartial.

The article is titled: "Exhaustive Kindle/Nook smackdown" but the article is far less than exhaustive and it doesn't even seem to sound impartial to me.
The piece seems to me to be about the Kindle 1 and seems to have been written by someone who's only experience with portable eBook readers is the Kindle 1 and maybe a cell phone or a pda. The interesting thing is how partisan the author is over reading devices. |

Not the best piece regarding comparisons between the two I've seen lately, but it had a couple of interesting points. Yes it seems like the guy owns a K1 and is using that experience to frame his view of other devices.
It's interesting he suggests in a previous post that Amazon will copy ebook lending of the nook. We can ONLY hope so. That's want consumers want, competition which erodes draconian DRM measures. Hopefully the Kindle will soon offer the ability to lend a book 5 times, then the nook will say 10 times, then they will say unlimted, which is what I want! (the same rights as a paper book thanks). |

Um, the Nook isn't "once", it's "one at a time".

where have you been? it's ONCE. only one time. ever. never again. not twice.
I do truly like the Kindle a lot, but it is irritating to see a "review" unless you know the reviewer has had both items at his disposal to put them through their paces |

How the heck do you have a device smackdown when one of the devices isn't even available yet?

Guy's the journalist is not claiming to be impartial, he is does state this is a response to another persons "pro nook" review. Hence the smackdown, this is his rebuttal. He also posts a link to the original post.

This is NOT his rebuttal of anything.
James Fallows is posting a letter he received from a reader. We don't know who this reader is or what their qualifications are. It is clear that the reader hasn't touched (or maybe even seen) a nook (hmm, didn't intend that). As for "extremely detailed Kindle/Nook compare and contrast"... The ONLY point the reader talks about is availability of books. And that point basically amounted to, Kindle can access PG and Google books with a bunch of manual conversions that are not needed on nook, so clearly Kindle is the champion. |

Yeah well I'll give you that it wasn't much of a rebuttal but I'm sure the author thought he was providing an exhaustive analytical counter.

Explain what? I was only summarizing the article. If you want more explanation, you will have to try to get James to reveal who the reader is.
