Is there anywhere to download a large collection of free public domain ebooks?
Just to get me started, is there anywhere I can download a zip file or any archive of a large collection of free books that have become public domain to kick start my library, rather than get them one by one from one of the many free ebook sites?

PG offer a download of an ISO DVD image with many thousands of books.
Honestly, though, you'd be a lot better off being more "selective". In the "Book Upload" forums here you'll find beautifully formatted versions of all the "classics", which are much, much better than those at PG. |

You may find ebay selling dvd(s) containing more than 10,000 public ebooks (not over US$20) in either kindle, epub, or LRB, etc. formats. Just use "ebook" keyword to search. It will save your time a lot!

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I will stick with the better formatted ones for the first few, but in case I want them, who are PG?

You can also download Google Books from the public domain now in epub. Check the download link on the right.

Go to advanced book search. Then tick "public domain only". Search for a book you would like. Click the book when it shows up. Then the displayed book will show a download arrow on the upper right side to click on. This enables you to download it as pdf or epub.

I see what you mean, but I was confused because I was asking about how to download a large collection in a zip or other archive, rather than individually.

Yes, that would only be for individual books.

@jusmee sorry about that. For the public domain stuff, you can certainly just torrent them. Nothing illegal there.

Here are some sites you can try. The books in the Baen free library are not in the public domain but are offered free from Baen Books. Additionally suvudu offers 3 or 4 books for free every month.
http://www.baen.com/library/ http://www.suvudu.com/freelibrary/ http://www.e-book.com.au/freebooks.htm http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page oops, just reread the orginal post theese links are for individual books not a zipped archive. |
