Manybooks.net down?

I discovered that Manybooks.net is now compatible with eReader, and attempted to go there to download some books—but the site is entirely unresponsive.

Was it not able to stand all the additional traffic from eReader users? :P

I was mainly interested in checking out the eReader app's integration with the website.

Actually it's not really an integration although it works quite well: you access the iPhone-friendly version of manybooks instead where you can download books in eReader's format.

The owner is moving house -- manybooks is a one-man band. I expect (and hope) it'll be back online soon.

I'm a big fan of manybooks.net. I've downloaded many books and donated a couple of times. I hope they're back up and running soon!

I was just there checking something, and the site is up. I didn't try a download, though.

The last time the site was down, it was apparently the victim of a DDOS attack. Neither the site owner nor I could imagine why.

I'm not sure what happened this time: queries to both email adresses I have for the site owner bounced. Richard's note above that the site owner was moving would account for the outage. The site actually runs on a Mac Mini connected to a DSL line. I'm pleased to see it's back.

This is what popped up in my GoogleReader:

Manybooks.net is moving to a new hosting center
Hopefully this won't take too long to set up -- but manybooks.net's systems will be down beginning October 16, 2008 for at least a few days. Sorry for the short notice!

Wow? Really... that's amazing. Any idea how much traffic he gets? A DSL line for basically a download site.

I have no idea, though he has apparently now shifted to an actual hosting service, which he alluded to doing at some point in an email exchange. But it was why the apparent DDOS attack put him down before: the server was up and running, but couldn't deal with 15 bogus queries per second and handle queries and serve ebooks.

Moving to an actual professional host should help. I was impressed when I heard about it too, as the site was generally quick and responsive. I credited efficient coding for at least part of it.

It's possible to get "symmetric" DSL (with the same speeds for upload and download) for a higher price, and that may have been what he used for teh connection.
