Blasco Ibáñez, Vicente: Blood and Sand. V1. 24 December 2012

Originally published in Spanish as "Sangre y Arena" in 1908, today this novel is best known as "Blood and Sand", from the famous Rudolf Valentino silent movie of the book.

The story was inspired by the life of bull fighter El Espartero, who died in the bullring in Madrid in 1894.

It is still quite gripping and very, very Spanish.

It has been filmed five times, the first time by Blasco Ibanez himself.

I used the Gutenberg edition, which required a certain amount of proofing, mainly missing spaces between words and the occasional duplicated line of text. I also altered the translation of one word. The 1919 Translation used the word 'anagram" to describe the letters SPQR (the abbreviation of the Lain for The Senate and People of Rome, still used by the City of Rome today). I used the word "abbreviation."

Vicent Blasco Ibanez is named in the traditional Spanish fashion: The family name is Blasco; his mother's maiden name is Ibanez. Hence I have indexed the surname as Blasco Ibanez.

I have taken the liberty of adding the diacritics to "Ibáñez".

About the second surname, in Spanish tradition women never change their names when married, so his mother's maiden name was the same as his mother's married name
