Accepting the official (old) Amazon update**.bin files, verifying and using them to downgrade the firmware to official (if old) versions.

That was just a comment/hint for ameho and those interested that the same result could be achieved in a slightly more usual manner, provided the device was jailbroken

Sorry for my poor english. I had to use google translate to retrieve meaning, but I believe that for the purposes at hand that should be fine. I know there is no need to remount the rootfs rw. But i don't know why the jailbroken device could get a more proper update.

@ameho: I think NiLuJe meant that if the device was already jailbroken, the oldupdate hack could have a usual name like Update_oldupdate_install.bin, no zh.sh would be needed and it would look nicer.
We tend to believe in UNIX philosophy: do one thing and do it well.
The hacks don't need to re-jailbreak the device, once the door is open. That's the job of jailbreak.
Imagine updating all the hacks with their own jailbreak when the old attack vector is closed and a new one is found.
Yes, this approach requires some level of cooperation and sharing of achievements, but that's no problem here on MobileRead.

See the attachments - that's how it would look like if it was invented here on MobileRead.
Anyway, it's a nice trick, thanks for sharing.

This file you have attached, which firmware does it install? (Or the file ameho linked).

I am getting a refurb PW1 tomorrow, which I assume will have the latest firmware. I will run the jailbreak before I do anything else, and I want to put an older (pre-cloud collections) FW on, and the backdoor lock, probably all before I register it.

This thread gives me hope that I don't have to make a live usb stick image to flash the older firmware.

@booklover6: It installs the .bin you put in "update" folder. So, you download .bin file for firmware version you want to downgrade to and copy it to "update" folder and then you copy to you PW1 both the folder and "Update_oldupdate_install.bin" file, and then you do the firmware update procedure (Menu>Settings>Menu>bla bla).
