I bet they changed their mind because library patrons were whining and complaining about not being able to get the ebooks...

...and HarperCollins is at least willing to sell new books for checkout. Random House and their higher-priced ebooks is nearly all that's left.

From today's O’Reilly’s Tools of Change Conference in New York:
Bilbary’s Tim Coates added: “twice as many books read in the US come from public libraries as come from bookstores. Every year, two billion books are circulated. That is a huge reason why publishers should take an interest.” and The Revson Foundation’s Julie Sandorf called libraries “the last remaining civic public square”. She and others reminded listeners that at a time of declining bricks-and-mortar stores, “libraries have real estate in every community. They can showcase and sell; they could become the new Barnes & Noble front window. Think about the utility of that”. These are changing times to be sure |

One of the main points of libraries is providing internet access to lower income folks. I have no idea why people ignore that fact when saying that the solution to disappearing libraries is online libraries. Do you people simply not spend time in poor areas?

what if libraries had print on demand machines? "hey, i borrowed this book last week and i really liked it. can i buy a copy?" the publisher and the library would both get a cut of the sale. i don't know the prices of those machines so i don't know if it would even be feasible. |

.. no it's not. The low income people I'm referring to will not HAVE internet access at home oftentimes, so having a brick and mortar location for them to get educational content is vital. People act like internet access is in every home in America. I'll ask again, do you people do any work with low income people or contact them on a regular basis?
