The Dentist by Scott Griffin 'Cassie Went’s life is anything but perfect. Married to a man imprisoned for murder, she tries to go about her daily life as if it was all a bad dream. He claims he was framed. And though she burns his letters, Cassie cannot help but wonder whether there is any truth in his theories. Secretly she films Hopper, their dentist, as he undertakes a routine extraction while she is sedated. What Cassie records shocks her to the core. Her husband’s claims of innocence suddenly seem truthful, his theories plausible. She resolves to find out just who Hopper is, and what he is about. But the dentist soon turns the tables on Cassie, and the hunter becomes the hunted. In this terrifying game of cat and mouse, will Cassie be able to prove Hopper’s guilt before it’s too late? Or will she also fall victim to the terrifying will of the dentist… ' UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dentist-Scot...ndeavour+press US http://www.amazon.com/Dentist-Scott-...ndeavour+press Au http://www.amazon.com.au/Dentist-Sco...ndeavour+press Can http://www.amazon.ca/Dentist-Scott-G...ndeavour+press Hammerhead by Thomas Black 'Mark Foster is not just a passport controller. He is also a ruthless killer. Everyone falls into two categories, he believes – murderers and victims. And he is no victim… By the time hotshot City boy Mark Allingham strays across his deadly path, Foster has already caught his scent. The self-styled ‘Shark’, Allingham is as arrogant and irredeemable as they come. Filthy rich with no sympathy for those underneath him, Mark ‘the Shark’ stops at nothing to line his pockets. Watching from the wings, Foster’s bank account groans and his lust for blood sharpens. Unable to control himself, this devilishly dark-minded passport controller delves into Allingham’s life, revealing untold secrets and dirty affairs. Illegal deals. Corporate corruption. Illicit love affairs. Stealing into Allingham’s apartment, Foster is about to learn what lies beneath the pompous yet clean façade. Indeed, all is not well for this ambitious city-dealer. But when he discovers that an officer from the Financial Services’ Authority is investigating the Shark as well, he must decide how to avoid getting caught. Can he quench his bloodthirst without taking down Allingham? Or has the game only just begun for the hunter and his ‘Hammerhead’ prey? The Travelling Detective: Boxed Set was recently reduced from $3.99 to 0.99 Amazon. I have not (yet) read these stories, but they appear to be well-reviewed (individually and as the set). I had them on my "watch list" for a while. The publisher is identified as Books We Love, Ltd., which seems to be a legit publisher.
I suspect this is a temporary price drop, but I don't know for a fact. Description at Amazon: Elizabeth Oliver is a travel writer who somehow gets drawn into a mystery each time she is researching an article for a travel magazine. Illegally Dead: Elizabeth happens upon the discovery of a skeleton in an old septic tank. Although she tells herself she doesn't have time to get involved, it isn't long before she is digging up long-buried secrets. When a second murder victim is found, Elizabeth's travel research provides clues to the disturbing truth behind the murders. The Only Shadow In The House: In this fast paced sequel to Illegally Dead, Edmonton travel writer Elizabeth Oliver is excited to get back on the open road to research a new article when, suddenly, an unexpected romance leads to a new murder mystery. Though she is determined to stay focused on her writing, Elizabeth can't ignore the familiar goose bumps she feels when handsome wheelchair basketball coach asks for her help to find out the truth about his mother's death. Whistler's Murder: Elizabeth Oliver has tagged along with her best friend Sally Matthews to Whistler where Sally is attending a science fiction/fantasy writing retreat. Elizabeth plans on spending the first week working on an article about Whistler for a travel magazine and then relaxing and enjoying being in the famous resort town for the second week. However, her well laid plan immediately begins to fall apart with the discovery of a body in a newly demolished house. Then she is again sidetracked when one of Sally’s fellow students asks her to solve the mystery of her cousin’s death and is then murdered herself. My pet peeve, of course, is that there is no actual box. The Travelling Detective at Amazon Last edited by cromag; 06-29-2015 at 08:51 AM. |

I saw the city first, shimmering from afar like the new Jerusalem in the setting sun. It was Sunday, 2nd August 1778.’ Edward Savill, a London clerk from the American Department, is assigned to New York to investigate the claims of dispossessed loyalists caught on the wrong side of the American War of Independence. A Detective in Love by H R F Keating 'DCI Harriet Martens is nicknamed the Hard Detective. But for Harriet, love proves more dangerous than any of her cases… Britain’s number one tennis star, the beautiful Bubbles Xingara, has been murdered in the grounds of her luxurious house. Harriet is now in charge of a case that will have the world’s media — already massing for the start of Wimbledon — out in force. But it is not the investigation that is about to explode Harriet’s life. Nor the string of murder suspects. For it seems that the happily married Hard Detective has fallen passionately in love with a fellow officer. As her obsession with Anselm Brent – her junior officer – develops, can she keep her eye on this high-profile case while navigating the chopping waters of a new, and secret, liaison? What further challenges are facing this troubled ‘Detective in Love’? And can she still catch her prey? ' UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/Detective-Lo...ndeavour+press US http://www.amazon.com/Detective-Love...ndeavour+press Au http://www.amazon.com.au/Detective-L...ndeavour+press Can http://www.amazon.ca/Detective-Love-...ndeavour+press Out of Reach by Adam Hamdy 'Thomas Schaefer is haunted by a memory. He has devoted a large part of his adult life to finding his kidnapped daughter. Since Amber’s disappearance ten years ago, Schaefer has become an expert in the recovery of missing people – his particular speciality is rescuing young adults from cults. Schaefer inhabits a dark world populated by sinister characters. His obsession with finding Amber draws him down a desperate path. His only seeming sources of succour are Doctor Harry Gilmore, a renown cult de-programmer, and Ellen Ovitz, a psychic Schaefer once consulted in his desperation to find his daughter. Gilmore and Ellen represent different approaches to life – the rational and the spiritual – and Schaefer finds himself torn between the two. Against his better judgment, Schaefer takes on a case that Gilmore brings him – the disappearance of a young girl, Katie Blake. The case shares many similarities with Amber’s kidnapping – the two girls even look the same. Schaefer meets Katie’s mother, Sally Blake and says he will find her missing daughter. Schaefer starts by shaking down known pedophiles, but has little success. He asks a police contact to investigate an occult symbol found at the scenes of Amber’s and Katie’s kidnappings. As he encounters more things he cannot explain, Schaefer turns to Ellen Ovitz, who tells Schaefer that there is a dark cloud around him – that he must give up the search for his daughter if he is to have any hope of salvation. Alistair Mathers, a renown occultist, discovers that Schaefer is at the heart of a dark conspiracy. Schaefer cannot give up the search for his daughter, and finds himself struggling with the challenge of an increasingly macabre world. She is slipping further and further 'Out of Reach'. When he is used to kill an innocent man and implicated in the murder of his police contact, Schaefer goes on the offensive and tracks down the people who are manipulating him. Schaefer discovers that he and his daughter are part of an occult ceremony that goes back hundreds of years, and that there is much more at stake than their lives: their souls face the prospect of eternal damnation. The White Road
by John Connolly is $1.99 at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FC...rds=white+road Below is the blurb: John Connolly thrilled readers with his bestselling novels, Every Dead Thing, Dark Hollow, and The Killing Kind. Now he delivers spellbinding suspense as Charlie Parker races to unravel a brutal crime committed in the Deep South. After years of suffering unfathomable pain and guilt over the murders of his wife and daughter, private detective Charlie Parker has finally found some measure of peace. As he and his lover, Rachel, are awaiting the birth of their first child and settling into an old farmhouse in rural Maine, Parker has found the kind of solace often lost to those who have been touched by true evil. But darkness soon descends when Parker gets a call from Elliot Norton, an old friend from his days as a detective with the NYPD. Now practicing law in Charleston, South Carolina, Elliot is defending a young black man accused of raping and killing his white girlfriend, the daughter of a powerful Southern millionaire. Reluctantly, Parker agrees to help Elliot and by doing so ventures into a living nightmare, a bloody dreamscape haunted by the specter of a hooded woman and a black car waiting for a passenger who never arrives. Beginning as an investigation into a young woman's death, it is a fast-moving descent into an abyss where forces conspire to destroy all that Parker holds dear. Hailed as a "master storyteller" (The London Express) by critics stateside and abroad, Connolly has once again delivered a riveting and suspenseful story that draws readers toward the horrifying crossroads of the past and present, of the living and the dead. "We are trapped not only by our own history but by the histories of all those with whom we choose to share our lives," he writes. As chillingly as it is beautifully rendered, The White Road is sure to tread a frightening path for even the most world-weary crime fiction fan. |

The Cavalier of the Apocalypse is the first in Susanne Alleyn's Aristide Ravel historical mystery series. (Although some listings say it is the third, but the author's own site calls it the first, so I'm going with that - and that also meshes with my memory from when I read and enjoyed this several years ago.)
It is free at: Nook US: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/cava...eyn/1100353748 Smashwords (DRM-free): https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/541311 Kobo US & UK: https://store.kobobooks.com/search?Q...lleyn+cavalier (whichever store you are signed into) And it's $0.99 at Amazon US (might get price-matched someday): http://www.amazon.com/Cavalier-Apoca...dp/B00PLUBJ36/ blurb: Spoiler:
