Amazon's Kindle Fire burns iPad momentum

Quote:
A new survey indicates that Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet is causing some prospective iPad purchasers to think twice.

Conducted by ChangeWave Research and reported by Fortune, the survey asked 2,600 "early adopter types" about their purchase plans for the Kindle Fire, which will be released next on Tuesday.

Of those surveyed, 26 per cent of those planning to purchase a $199 Kindle Fire responded that they were delaying or putting on hold a purchase of Apple's $499-to-$829 iPad 2.

I love my iPad 2. I ordered a kindle fire. Had it come out a few months ago I may have recommended it over the iPad to my mom.

Hah. The early adopters would already have some form of tablet by now.

I can't decide whether I should get one as a complement to my iPad or not.

But it shouldn't be surprising that people who have decided to buy a Fire would put off buying an iPad.

I test ran an iPad and found myself not getting any work done--it was an entertainment consumption device (I'm not a big Skyper, and I'd rather use a camera for photography than a big slab). So I figure, why not get an Fire?

Thinking of getting one but the 8GB internal memory and lack of microSD slot is rather off-putting. If I get one, I'll primarily be using it for reading Japanese comics and those tend to weigh in at around 50~100MB per volume. Since a single volume is usually only good for 15 minutes worth of reading, I need at least 16GB for a decent size selection of reading material. Alas, cloud storage is not the answer here due to bandwidth caps on cellular data and slow internet on most free, shared wi-fi hotspots.

"Early adopter" does cast the survey into doubt. They'd have an iPad or one of the Androids or the HP tablet or ... Anyone who does not currently own a tablet cannot be considered an early adopter.

I'd say the new general purpose Nook casts more doubt on the iPad than the Amazon-locked Fire.

Amazon has the general brand recognition and size to compete, Nook and B&N don't.

The new Nook is better than the Kindle Fire, no doubt. But since when does "better" matter in the tablet space? There are plenty of superior tablets out there that don't sell well at all. "Better" only seems to matter when it comes to better marketing. So the Kindle Fire will outsell the new Nook many times over.

I don't think the Kindle Fire is really a fair comparison to the IPad - to me they seem to be aimed at a different market. It's a bit like comparing a Nikon SLR to the cheap digital camera you take on holidays - they both have a niche market (and having one doesn't rule out owning the other). I would see the real competition for the IPad being the new Asus Transformer Prime - and aimed at the same market.
I do think there is a HUGE market for a cheap no-frills tablet with wi-fi connection and bookreader software. Something that will show You Tube clips, play MP3s, let you read the news and books and catch up on Facebook. At about $200 this would sell mega-millions. I mean, we'd all like to drive the Rolls or the Merc all the time, but most of us have to make do with the 4 cylinder commuter car!

Yep, I got my iPad when it was released.... I won't bother with the Fire, but I did order a Kindle Touch.

Yes, they are different devices, but there are folks who bought, or considered, the iPad, simply because for them it was the best tool for the job at the time. That may have changed for some people now, especially if you want a simple no-frills tablet for media consumption. Amazon has the brand name to make this work.
