[Lord of the Rings ebook download] gets very different results from just [Lord of the Rings]. [Lord of the rings ebook] first hit gets me amazon... with a blurb that says "A Christian can almost be forgiven for not reading the Bible, but there's no salvation for a fantasy fan who hasn't read the gospel of the genre, J.R.R. Tolkien's ..." Presumably, that's from the review? If I didn't *know* the books, I'd assume this was some other book with the same name, either written earlier and now pushed into popularity, or written afterward, using LOTR to push a religious message. Second hit is the Mobileread discussion thread comparing different versions. Third hit is *books*, not ebooks, for sale. Fourth & later hits are torrent & "DOWNLOAD FREE EBOOK" sites. And before anyone talks about clearing caches--this is on a new install of Portable Opera; I've been using this browser for a few days. (And not for ebook hunting or torrenting.) None of the non-Amazon sales sites come up at all. I think the public can be forgiven for not realizing how many of the download sites are unauthorized, when the stores don't even come up in searches. |

What if you switch to using DNS servers from Open DNS? Would you then be able to get to these "banned" sites from the UK?

I believe the block is at the IP level, not the DNS level. Of course there are ways around it for the dedicated criminal, but these blocks are put in place to deter the casual pirate, not the serious one.

I fail to understand this obsession with blocking sites. People who access these sites are usually savvy enough to find ways to bypass these restrictions (all you need is a Google search). At the end of the day, this brings publicity to the sites which may make things worse.

It is all about increasing friction.
The harder it is to do something, the more people will give up along the way and just not bother. Some people will always continue to the end, no matter how hard it is, but most won't. An increasing awareness that legal action is being taken may also dissuade people. |

Can't see how this "good news", i couldn't care less. And i don't believe it'll help reduce piracy. Making some decent and easy to use legal offer, that's the way. |

Its using BT's Cleanfeed™ technology... Which means it is sidestepped by the highly technical means of changing http to https.
