For my third nomination, I'll go with A Room With A View by E. M. Forster. I started it recently, while waiting for something, and was rather enamored, so I'd like to give it a full and proper go.

To quote directly the text as loaded by user 'weatherwax' where she uploaded the epub in the Library (<---linky)...

"This Edwardian social comedy explores love and prim propriety among an eccentric cast of characters assembled in an Italian pensione and in a corner of Surrey, England. A charming young English woman, Lucy Honeychurch, faints into the arms of a fellow Britisher when she witnesses a murder in a Florentine piazza. Attracted to this man, George Emerson--who is entirely unsuitable and whose father just may be a Socialist--Lucy is soon at war with the snobbery of her class and her own conflicting desires.

Back in England she is courted by a more acceptable, if stifling, suitor, and soon realizes she must make a startling decision that will decide the course of her future: she is forced to choose between convention and passion.

The enduring delight of this tale of romantic intrigue is rooted in Forster's colorful characters, including outrageous spinsters, pompous clergymen and outspoken patriots. Written in 1908, A Room With A View is one of E.M. Forster's earliest and most celebrated works."

Cheers,
Marc

I'll second this. Been wanting to read Wilkie Collins for a while.

I'd like to suggest H G Wells War of the Worlds. Definitely a classic, great descriptions of Victorian England, vastly better than any of the films.

Available free from many sources including Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/36

I enjoyed it, though it is Edwardian in flavor. The humor is subtle but the social satire is well done IMO.

To add to what doreenjoy said, I suggest reading that entire thread. There are many books in there that have been boring to some people that others would consider favourites. "Classics", quite understandably (remember school? ) get a fair old mention, and it wouldn't surprise me if most every book nominated in this thread has been or eventually will be mentioned in that.

FWIW, the small few pages of this book I started fascinated me much because of the language. I felt it as perfection... something to aspire to (if, perhaps, evolved to our own times ). Its humour was subtle - small smile rather than LOLing). YMMV.

Cheers,
Marc

Remember school? Yup we had to read '1984' because it was 1982 and the teacher thought that the time was nearing! Is 1984 a classic?

Yes but it doesn't meet the public domain qualification outlined in this thread. See post #4.
