web browser
I'm a bit confused about this.
Is is only the 950 that has a browser? How does it compare to the one on the kindle? |

The 950 is the only Sony reader with WIFI and related browser. The browser cannot be used with 3G. I have never used a Kindle, so I don't know how Sony's compares. One shortcoming of the 950 browser is that it only works in portrait mode even though the screen is better suited for landscape when it comes to web pages. Seems like a firmware update could enhance that feature, but Sony rarely ever updates firmware.

Wikipedia works really well. For most websites I think the Kindle browser is better. The K3 has a special article mode that isolates the text and makes it easier to read. Sometimes sites on the Sony can't resize text and the lack of landscape is annoying.

thanks ken and bwgirl,
the kindle browser won't do landscape mode either, which is fine by me. it's a little disappointing that only the 950 has a browser. so the 950 has different firmware then? |

Yes, the firmware is a little different than the 350 & 650 models. It is mostly the same. However, the 950 firmware has extra menu options to incorporate the Wi-fi features such as Wikipedia look-up and also the addition of the browser and Sony Reader Store apps.

thanks peoples.
one other quick OT question: is it the x50 series that has the IR touchscreen or alternatively, which ones have the best screen? How does it compare to the pearl screen on kindle 3? I'd like to get one but want to avoid that touch layer that causes that ungodly glare I've heard about. |

The x50's have the best screens from Sony to date. The 600 and 900 have the extra touch layer that reduces contrast and increases reflections.

Since 350 and 650 models lack wifi / 3G, web browser doesn't make much sense on them.
K3 and x50 models use exactly the same screen manufactured by exactly the same company. |
