New Nook news Sept-Nov 2011
Lots of things going on.
http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/23/bn-...-this-quarter/ "The ninjas at The Digital Reader have uncovered the names of two new Nook Color versions – the Encore, priced at $249, and the Acclaim, priced at $349. The Nook Touch (now called the Nook Smart Touch) will remain $139. What are these new devices? Nate at The Digital Reader posits that the Smart Touch is a 6-inch Nook Touch while the Encore is a 7-inch Nook Color. Aside from the fact that the Acclaim is also a shuttered games company, we know very little about the new devices. All of these products should hit in Q4 and given Amazon’s race to build an Android reader, they can’t come too soon. The Nook Color and the Nook Touch are both excellent devices but the Color is a bit dated in these days of retina screens and Honeycomb. A strong refresh should keep B&N’s momentum going for the next few months." Last edited by frahse; 10-29-2011 at 01:29 AM. Reason: update |

My Take on it is The Nook Smart Touch will become the official name of the All new Nook STR we refer to it around here. The Nook Encore will be the nook color with some improvments and a bump in specs The Acclaim will be more of a full feldge Tablet that will most likely have full Android Market access etc. running most likey running Gingerbread. |

Amazon announces it's coming out with two tablets, now B&N says it's coming out with two tablets. B&N can counterpunch!
I agree the 7" will be a refreshed NC. As to the 10", I just don't see the business case for a full on Android tablet, with access to the Android Market. B&N is in business to sell B&N stuff, not Android Market apps and games. According to that report, there is some connection between B&N and a gaming company. My bet is that B&N will bump up it's app store, and go big into gaming, especially children's and educational games. Children's books were a big part of B&N 's original NC push.who knows, they may take a shoot at some streaming video business, too, now that Netflix is showing vulnerability. Now this is not fulfillment of Android fan's dreams, but B&N has it's investor's demands to meet, first, last, and always. |

True facts; pretty slick move on their part. Kudos to B&N for keeping the pressure on.

The source has an erratic track record ... it's a sole proprietor blog where "rumours" sometimes go way off the deep-end. Just this week, the blog claimed Kindle's Android app market had been launched worldwide.
That said, the post merely confirmed that B&N already sells a $139 eink touch reader and a $249 color reader ... and added the genuine news that a $349 tablet of some sort ("Acclaim") is on the way. It's important to note the blogger even admits: "On the other hand, the Acclaim tablet could be anything. And that makes it so much more fun – I can speculate to my heart’s content." Another few breathless keystrokes later, suddenly Gamestop, Disney and B&N are collaborating on this tablet. We might want to wait a few hours or days to see what B&N is really launching in Q4, if anything. It is certainly a leap to believe that B&N can launch a 10" gaming tablet for $349 when Samsung -- with mega resources in comparison -- is struggling to release something fitting that description for under $500. If Amazon is really making its tablet announcement next Wed Sep 28, we won't have to wait long to hear from B&N. Oh, and Pottermore goes live a couple of days later. An update on New Nook News Sept 2011
New - for late 2011 or early 2012 Barnes and Noble should announce something in the next few days because Amazon has a press conference on September 28. Earlier reports had at least one new Nook coming at the end of September, so it would seem that Amazon was trying to head that off with their Sept 28 press conference. Barnes and Noble eReader tablets-- $139 (Question if upgraded) 6" Grayscale Nook Smart Touch $250 New Upgraded 7" Nook Color 2 code name Encore $349 New 9 to 10" code name Nook Acclaim The Acclaim appears aimed at the market of Magazines and Newspaper readers. Some say it might also be aimed at gamers. A gamer tablet would require more horsepower under the hood, both CPU and Graphics. There are consistent reports that Radio Shack will start carrying Nooks as well as Kindles. Some big box stores have also been mentioned. |

I hope the Acclaim is 10" and not 9". Though I'd accept a smaller size if it has analog sticks, d-pad, and buttons for gaming.
I am also hoping for at least a dual core 1.5ghz OMAP4460 and 1GB of RAM. Though I would prefer the OMAP4470 1.8ghz that is coming out Q4 of this year and has a dedicated 2D graphics core. If it is a gaming tablet as was hypothesized, it could very well have the newer one. Theory is that the tablet will be sold by both Gamestop and Barnes & Noble as they are partners. Gamestop was in a way owned by Barnes & Noble before they spun off. Leonard Riggio is both chairman of the board at Barnes & Noble and director at GameStop. They do sell physical games. However, they want to get into Video games, which is a huge market, especially for tablets. The iPad may be the number one mobile gaming device, and B&N aims to get a piece of that.

I think that the estimated price-point for the Acclaim is a little low if it's to be a gaming tablet. Considering the hardware that would be necessary for it to be serious in gaming.
Unless, of course, it IS a joint venture by B&N and Gamestop, and it's going to be full of ads and such for both stores (kind of like the Kindle w/ Special Offers, but more "in your face" with ads). |

Trouble with these gaming devices is that they tend to need such high-end hardware that the battery life is very short. It'll be interesting to see what emerges.
