report: samsung will reduce dependance on Android by partnering with MS

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news...33_118544.html

Quote:
Samsung Electronics is moving to fight back against Apple by strengthening its partnerships with American mobile carriers to develop new technologies to get away from the U.S. firm’s claims on design.

The world’s biggest smartphone maker is in talks with major telecom carriers on Apple’s home-turf such as Verizon Wireless about modified designs in Samsung Galaxy devices. It is also closely partnering with Microsoft (MS) to cut its dependency on Google Android, according to officials Wednesday.

“Samsung has been in talks with major U.S. carriers to jointly develop modified design technology. This will be effective, though we can’t unveil more details for the time being,” said an official from the company’s telecommunications division.
Quote:
Samsung confirmed that it will immediately sue Apple if the latter releases products using advanced long-term evolution (LTE) mobile technology. LTE has been emerging as the top standard in the global mobile industry.
The latest iPad already have LTE.

Yesterday, this new Windows Phone was announced. Sexy beast.

Quote:
The internals are similar, then, to the company's Galaxy S III handset. The externals, however, are very different. The front is Gorilla Glass 2. The back eschews the plastic of the Android handset in favor of brushed aluminium.

Considering the M$ market penetration in the mobile field that would be like spitting on a volcano to stop an eruption.

MS already collects its share on android patents. Being the big monopoly it is, it simply produced too much file formats and protocols that other manufacturers simply have to implement so that users may be able to integrate their devices to PCs, such as MS's old FAT filesystem that is used everywhere in USB devices.

So they're "partnering" and paying full upfront to the mob.

Alliances in war are tricky things, and always hard to predict.

But anyway, Apple has certainly declared war, and I think all the other entities are going to join together in mutual support but of course without any formal declarations.

For example, is it true that Google searches from Apple machines sometimes are erratic? Yes Google is working on the problem if it indeed does exist.

Are Samsung displays on Apple machines as dependable as they used to be? Samsung has said that the problems stem from other electronics on the Apple devices and certain incompatibilities but they are working diligently on the problem from their side.

Samsung display on the iPhone seems to work fine.

Samsung would be dumb to not be considering Windows phones. But they would also be dumb to expect to make much money on them.

Windows phones give them more leverage with Google if they try to exploit their market share in future, and, who knows, maybe the next version of Windows will actually sell on phones in significant numbers?

All it takes is the MS-certified IT people being required to push MS phones and tablets as part of the whole "business runs on windows" line and we can forget about both Google and Apple. It doesn't matter what works better, only who has the best strongarm machine.

Let us hope so (I know you didn't mean it that way), it would be good for all of us if WM can become a strong third contender for mobile OSs.

A strong contender, sure. I just don't want to see them being the only contender like they are in the desktop PC market.

Perhaps I was too indirect Otterbooks.

The question is whether in the future these things will work so well. Will Google and Samsung display all the dedication to making sure Apple products satisfy Apple customers as they have in the past?

Android is 98% of Samsung smartphone and tablet sales, it's not new that Samsung is an MS partner. It doesn't change from the fact that consumers don't care to buy MS stuff.

Suppliers Apple has sued could well simply provide Apple with the letter of their contracts, nothing more, nothing less. If Apple keeps suing the very companies who provide hardware or software for their Apple branded devices I expect Apple's component costs to increase. Other than being generally pissed at Apple a supplier like Samsung could easily justify such moves as needed to simply cover any current AND future losses due to such "settlements". Maybe they are right or wrong, doesn't really matter as it is actually funny to follow.

As I recall did Apple not make some similar sort of power play back in the mid-to-late 80s which sort of backfired on them over the long term when business users went all-in with MS? I just do not recall the exact circumstance but it seems there was something. And no I am not thinking of the whole "browser war" matter that was different. I know there was the whole GUI thing as well, maybe it was that I am thinking of? But the GUI/mouse thing was in the 90s wasn't it?

Anyway, this seems like it might all blow up in Apple's face if supplies who also make components begin adding an "Apple Tax" to bids leaving Apple to either chose from lesser suppliers or paying the higher costs while competitors making other branded devices enjoy lower component costs simply because they aren't trying to sue everyone under the sun. Heck maybe Apple can find a way to sue Sun somehow (OK sue Oracle since they own what was once Sun MS).

Of course there is a rule that if one does not want too many customers you keep increasing rates/prices until you reach that eutectic point so you keep profits high but have lower support overhead. Basically it's the reverse of mass produced make-it-up in volume approach. Price high to earn the same amount of profit with less headache of too many customers. Plus I found customers who are willing to pay more tend to be more rational when issues arrise. Lower tier customers are very often the highest overhead. So maybe Apple flat does not care if they must increase prices, their customer base is the sort who will just keep adding zeros to the check as long as that logo is on the device. And then MS can, once again have the business world almost completely to themselves...

I don't know, it is all just very weird to watch. Like watching a shark feeding on it's own entrails I suppose.

If owning the phone market was that easy, Microsoft would have done it years ago. If people don't want Windows phones, at best that would mean they'd be carrying two phones, one for work and one for their own use.
