Library experiments Sony Reader circulation

Quote:
Though libraries are often wary about circulating hardware devices, and the Sony Reader is not yet optimized for libraries, the Broward County Library (BCL), Fort Lauderdale, FL, reports significant success—after some bumps in the road—in what it calls its Sony Reader Circulation Project.
...
Library officials hope that the next edition of the Reader—now priced at $299—may offer more flexibility to libraries. Daniel Albohn, Manager of New Business Developer for the Sony Reader, told LJ, “I fully expect, in the months ahead, that libraries will experiment more with Sony Readers, including circulate them to their patrons.”

Meanwhile, the Sparta Public Library, NJ, reports that it is still circulating Amazon.com Kindle devices to happy library users; though Amazon officially looks askance at such practices, the company has not contacted the library, according to Assistant Director Diane Lapsley.
How can they be using Kindles? The Kindle cannot handle DRM laden Mobipocket eBooks as is without a hack. And we know the Kindle cannot deal with DRM laden PDF or any PDF without first some sort of conversion.

From their blog: http://www.newatsparta.blogspot.com/

They have two Kindles and they put on the books before the loan. If the user buys any books with the unit they will charge his/her account for the purchase.

there is a California public library using Kindles for in-house reading (not circulating). Here is a write up I did on it for the Facebook group Ebook Readers in Libraries:

California's Rancho Mirage Public Library now provides two Amazon Kindles to their readers.
In an article called "Rancho Mirage library offers new device for 'electronic' reading" Steve Moore writes in the August 5 Press-Enterprise about the new service. http://tinyurl.com/5konlt.
You can also read the library's press release at:

This is really interesting. I live in Broward County and I never even heard of the project. I'll have to get on this.
