It's amazing for reading. I loved my first one to pieces. It sounds like the one you got is like my first one. This one has a better screen but a more noticeable blue border especially on one side that shows up on even dark backgrounds.

I haven't tried to read on it yet that's my next step but I love the form factor of the HDX which is why I keep trying to get a good one! What case do you get? I am going to make case thread here shortly.

I didnt buy a case for it, I will use the one I have for my Kindle Fire and just take it out to use. Im mostly at home with it, so dont really need a case for it around the house. Generally if I out and about, I use my iPhone since it is on a data plan and the Kindle is wi-fi. But when we go out for dinner, I'll just pop it in the Fire case I have for transporting safety.
Further investigation into this Kindle, thought I would check out the video and camera options. Downloaded two TV shows via home wi-fi for testing purposes. First one was NCIS in 720 HD. Took about 20 mins to download. Second one was from my Amazon Prime list, Justification pilot show, 15 min download time in SD mode. Then I put the kindle into airplane mode and watched them both. SD version was good, picture quality was good, sound good, no problems, playback was perfect. Then the NCIS episode in 720 HD. Noticeble improvement to resolution, very sharp and totally gorgeous! Again, no issues with playback in airplane mode. A+ for video playback
Then turned on the camera and took a pic of my living room. Very sharp picture, good quality. Amazon even has picture editing with quite a few settings. Nice! Front camera for Skype is less resolution but its a lower quality camera for video chatting. Good enough.

I decided to pick one up and OMG it just blows the doors off the previous Fires I had/have, the 1st gen which I traded in to BB for the 2nd.

Reading? Fantastic, no distraction whatsoever.
Browsing? Tried it at my local library and B&N with Silk and the WiFi is very fast.
Games? Temple Run, Riptide GT and Subway Surfers ran great! Excellent interaction with screen touches throughout.
Screen? It needs to be seen to believed. Netflix, Prime Videos, Flixster were fantastic playing parts of some movies!

More later! Just wow so far!

Great that you are happy with it. The 8.9 sounds like a great device. A little too pricey for me but Enjoy!

Well that was the first step, liking it. That makes me want to continue trying it out and deciding to keep it. I have taken some devices back after the first day in the past.

When one has other devices, it comes down the want over a need for another. I have to weigh if the experience using a new one is much much better than what is owned, specs do not count.

The HDX really surprised me. The iPad 2 for 16GB is still $399. Say what?

Yes I have it on mine and no you can't get rid of it as it's part of the Kindle Fire soft keys menu.

One bug I notice on the HDX or maybe it's Mantano not sure but when reading a book in Mantano if you hit the arrow back key it closes the program instead of taking you to your bookshelf. I am thinking this either a bug in the new KF firmware or it was there before and I didn't notice but I think I would have notice it as on my HDX 1 as I read quite bit on it using Mantano before I figure out how to embed fonts.

I went to Walmart to buy a tablet for Swagbucks and they had the nexus 7 there. It's a nice tablet but I don't think the display is as good as the HDX. The colors on the HDX just pop! If only that stupid blue border wasn't there. It would be the best hands down.

Yes that tab is on all apps that don't code correctly. I think the page numbers display when the Mantano menu is visible if you need to see them. You can just turn off page numbers are the bottom. I did.

The text is better on the HDX too. I am sure the next Nexus will catch up though in the next release. I may get one when they do because I like the form factor.

For me the reading app would be the most important thing on there, and it is so distracting I don't think I could ever get used to it (seemed like it spilled into the corners a good 3/8"). Sepia didn't seem that much better.

And it varies on every device! The one I have know is okay except for that one side that is pure blue hardly any transparency and shows on everything.

Blossom I have a silly question, maybe, but why don't you use the Kindle reading app? Won't it work with your modified ebooks?

I found the Mantano app bottom of the screen distracting because covered up the KFHD info.

You have better options with Mantano like you can choose your background and font colors and custom fonts. I use both or will once I get over the blue border. It really is distracting.

I mentioned this before but the blue border disappears TOTALLY if you use white text on a black background. I haven't seen that blue border since I purchased the unit and set up my reading pane.

Oh yeah custom fonts. I hope you do and can get over the blue border. It looks like really nice and clear text on the display model at the store.

Nope not on this particular unit. I wish it did that left side blue strip is visible on everything even black.

This one has the best display yet it's just the left side blue strip that ruins it. The other sides are more transparent and blend better but it looks like someone took a blue marker and drew a straight line at the edge. There is hardly any transparency to it.
