Yeah, that was part of what I had in mind when I said "not pleasant."

It shouldn't be as bad this time, though. For one thing, the books are mainly repeats. So, you won't have as many to vet in order to see if you want to purchase them.

FREE Pdf of the Big, Highly Rated Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers.

It amazes me how so many times schools and other non-profit organizations are able to induce publishers to allow their books to be posted for free download on their websites. These are often books that the publishers regularly sell, sometimes at pretty steep prices. Case in point: this ebook from publisher John Wiley & Sons. The least expensive new copy appears to be $62.49 (a Kindle mobi) at Amazon. The University of Missouri Extension, however, offers it free, as a pdf, on their website.

This book is oriented toward farmers (commercial growers). Maybe there aren't many of them in Mobilereader land, but I'm sure that serious gardeners could glean a lot of helpful information from it, too.

Title: Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers.
Format: Pdf.
Author(s): Donald N. Maynard; George J. Hochmuth.
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Pages: xv + 621.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): 4.1 (17); 4.08 (13) at GoodReads.
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at Amazon if available there: $49.49 (Used Paperback, "Good"). The Kindle mobi is $62.49.
Book Description (Amazon):
The leading one-stop reference for commercial vegetable growers for more than 50 years

Rooted in tradition, branching out to the future. For more than half a century, Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers has provided generations of commercial growers with the most timely, accessible, and useful information available on the subject. The Fifth Edition of this highly regarded horticultural mainstay provides readers with the reliable growing and marketing information they've come to expect, while including new and updated material throughout to maintain its relevance in our ever-changing world.

Filled with valuable information, largely in the form of tables and charts--from hard statistics on vegetable production and consumption to essential information for today's international markets, such as vegetable botanical names and vegetable names in nine languages--Knott's Handbook is part Farmer's Almanac, part encyclopedia, and part dictionary. It also provides detailed, practical specifics on planting rates, schedules, and spacing; soils and fertilizers; methods for managing crop pests; greenhouse vegetable and crop production; insect pest identification; harvesting and storage; and vegetable marketing.

Now available in a new flexible cover designed for ease of use on the desk or in the field, this valuable workhorse features new information on:
* World vegetable production
* Best management practices
* Organic crop production
* Food safety
* Pesticide safety
* Postharvest problems
* Minimally processed vegetables
* Plus, hundreds of Web site links related to vegetable information

Comments: This is the fifth edition (2007), which is the most recent one.

Bernini: His Life and His Rome
by Franco Mormando

is $2.19 at Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Bernini-His-Li...ywords=Bernini

Below is the blurb:
Sculptor, architect, painter, playwright, and scenographer, Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) was the last of the great universal artistic geniuses of early modern Italy, placed by both contemporaries and posterity in the same exalted company as Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo. And his artistic vision remains palpably present today, through the countless statues, fountains, and buildings that transformed Rome into the Baroque theater that continues to enthrall tourists today.

It is perhaps not surprising that this artist who defined the Baroque should have a personal life that itself was, well, baroque. As Franco Mormando’s dazzling biography reveals, Bernini was a man driven by many passions, possessed of an explosive temper and a hearty sex drive, and he lived a life as dramatic as any of his creations. Drawing on archival sources, letters, diaries, and—with a suitable skepticism—a hagiographic account written by Bernini’s son (who portrays his father as a paragon of virtue and piety), Mormando leads us through Bernini’s many feuds and love affairs, scandals and sins. He sets Bernini’s raucous life against a vivid backdrop of Baroque Rome, bustling and wealthy, and peopled by churchmen and bureaucrats, popes and politicians, schemes and secrets.

The result is a seductively readable biography, stuffed with stories and teeming with life—as wild and unforgettable as Bernini’s art. No one who has been bewitched by the Baroque should miss it.

Also on the American Psychological Association's website I found this free pdf.

Entitled Celebrating Her Spirit, this book of about 25-pages appears to be a facsimile of the program of Coretta Scott King's funeral and the events connected with it. Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, passed away 10 years ago last Saturday.

But there is much more--things about her life--that you may find interesting in this funeral program. They include many wonderful photos; tributes to, and proclamations concerning, her, from notable people; biographical information; and a timeline of her life.

Here's the direct link to the book, on the American Psychological Association's website.

Invincible Louisa
by Cornelia Meigs

Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, the four famous March sisters in Little Women, were more than just storybook characters. The author, Louisa May Alcott, based that book on her own loving family - her parents and her sisters, Anna, Elizabeth, and May.

Bronson Alcott's mother taught him to write on their kitchen floor. Determined to make a life for himself, Bronson set out to find an educational institution where he could teach.

Through his endeavours, Bronson met his future wife, Abba May. Once married, they moved to Germantown - the start of their many moves.

His four daughters, Anna, Louisa, Elizabeth and May, were his pride and joy. Louisa was the most daring of all of them. From an early life, Louisa was always getting into trouble and loved the outdoors.

A particularly cunning publisher, Mr Thomas Niles, urged Louisa to write a book for girls. Louisa wrote about her own mother and sisters. Little Women became a sensational hit around the world.

From the proceeds, Louisa was able to provide her family with the desperately needed stable income - her one aim in life. She gave her family everything they ever wanted or needed.

She finally had fame and affection - something that was seldom earned.

In this book, Cornelia Meigs tells us the full story of the Alcott (March) family. An unbelievable story of a brave, loving family, even more wonderful than Little Women.

Cornelia Meigs (1844 - 1973) was an American writer. She wrote both fiction and biographies for children. Meigs won the Newbery Medal for this book

FREE Handwriting Skills Resource Guide for Teachers and Parents of Young Tykes.

I got the idea, from the title, that this book would deal with only cursive writing. But, I was wrong--it includes the other kind, too, whatever it's called ("printed"?).

I can see teachers in elementary schools referencing this book. Also, I can see parents using this book with great profit to help a little one who is learning or will soon be learning handwriting, of whatever kind.

The book is extremely detailed. I didn't know that there was so much information about learning how to write and write well! I don't think that any teacher or parent possibly could use everything in the book; I see, instead, teachers and parents taking a bit here and a bit there.

There are no ratings (that I could find), due to the source of this book. But, it is recommended by HomeSchoolFreebie.com.

To save some other peeps--ones in the U.S.--the trouble of checking . . . . Substituting ".com" for ".co.uk" brings up the book's webpage, but the area where the price, etc. is is completely blank.

There is a Kindle mobi of this title at the U.S. Amazon. However, it is $9.99 at the present time.

Notes of a Camp-Follower on the Western Front by E.W. Hornung

Review

”This is the account of a man who went out to run a YMCA kitchen just behind the front line. He is very passionate and clearly a supporter of the war effort. He avoids naming units etc. It is an unusual perspective and one I had never seen before. If you have a good knowledge of the first world war you will get a lot from this. “

E.W. Hornung was an English author best known for writing the A.J. Raffles series about an English gentleman thief in the late 19th century.

Book Description (Amazon):
In his first book (2007) Willem Middelkoop mentioned it wasn't a question if our financial system would collapse, but only when. The words proved prophetic. At the end of 2008 we were only a few hours away from the complete collapse of our global credit home.?In this book Middelkoop describes the history and characteristics of our current financial system and he shows us the true value and background of money. Gold appears to be the only currency to have never lost it's purchasing power over thousands of years. So, in a world full of crisis and currency wars it is no surprise gold is being discovered as a safe store of value once again. Gold and the secret of money contains essential information for anyone with a full piggy bank, large inheritance or bad retirement.
Comments: This is the 3rd edition (2014).
