Article on music, MP3s, DRM. Read it, and think EBOOKS...
Here's an interesting article on CNET with an interview with the guy that founded MP3.COM in the late '90s. Regardless of what you might think of the guy, he has some VERY interesting things to say, particularly if, as you read the article, you substitue 'books' for 'music' and 'ebook' for 'MP3'...
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10316733-93.html Particularly interesting are his comments on the outcome of 'closed' vrs. 'open' formats, and "the Sony effect" (in light of the recent Sony ePUB conversion). Great food for thought!!! Everett |

"Microsoft decided we aren't going to partner with the users. We're going to partner with the studios and labels. That's where they made their bet and people who made those bets are going to lose because consumers are going to get what they want. "
This is the crux of the article for me - the online music industry, and now ebook industry, is consumer driven. Distributors that partner with publishers and institute restrictive practices will lose. Distributors that champion readers, which after all are their customers, will win. It will be fascinating to watch Sony's attempt to re-enter the market with DRM'ed ePub books, crippled 3G access, etc. |
