Ah yeah! a 3... Yeah man they are tough little suckers. Hard to brick.
I should know I beat the living pulp out of mine in it's lifetime and it's soldiered on regardless. Honestly think that with just a bit more setup you will have this rolling. STEP 1) Ditch dropbear. Get yourself some ssh keys and once you have logged in with them successfully once.. Switch that FALSE to TRUE that we looked at in /usbnet/etc/config... make the key, keep the private in ~/.ssh/ (this is the default from running ssh-keygen and just pressing enter about 8 times lol) get the public key and shove it in /usbnet/etc/authorized_keys (make the file, fill if with the PUBLIC key string) try authenticating (should "just work") Ditch the dropbear. That will be a step forward at the very least There has to be AT LEAST 5 or 6 guides on here about this more fulsome in detail than my potted guide here. But I covered the essentials. |

iam going to stop for today ... but iam going to do this! Iam quite happy to see my dektop screen on the kindle... its possible.. yeah! I questioned myself whether the battery of my kindle will scuff by loading it through USB. Or is usbnetwork preventing that? And how do I terminate kvncviewer? |

how did you start it?
myts? make a script to close it in myts then... #!/bin/sh killall -9 kvncviewer (or whatever the exact name is) or just press HOME IIRC I should really blow the dust of the 3 and try it but I think that worked. |

Happy days mate. Look after those eyes. I suspect that this will all be an "amusing memory" soon enough. Took me days to do my first device. Minutes to do my latest one.
Such is the way with experience. |

Sorry if I didn't understand correctly, but if you want mainly to edit latex, wouldn't a terminal and text editor be a much simplier solution? Problem is you can't process latex in the Kindle, but you can transfer the tex file to your computer, run pdflatex and copy the pdf back (via ssh). This also uses much less bandwidth than a vnc link, so you should get rid of network interruptions too.

No, the network interruptions seem to be a "feature" of the Kindle, unfortunately. I had the same problems with my K3 - I think the netwatchd is the culprit, yes. But I found it leaves SSH connections untouched, so I resorted to tunnel the VNC port through SSH. I configured SSH to create a remote-listening port and configured the VNC viewer accordingly (e.g. tunnel "-R5901:localhost:5901", then configure vncviewer to connect to localhost:1) (5901 is the port for VNC display #1).

Of course there are not universal solutions and the original poster might prefer the remote desktop approach, in which case the ssh tunneling might be a valuable insight. |

Check the thread on the new MedReader that is in the works - it **DISPLAYS** Latex - no post processing into another document type required. There are screenshots of the Kindle displaying Latex pages in that thread. I.E: In the use case you have stated, a zero-bandwidth solution. Note: Since MedReader is being tested in the new port of the Midori web browser, you will find some of its screen shots in that thread. Also in the works (a big MAYBE) is a DICOM format image display. Just for those who want to display medical imaging files in the Kindle, not just read about them in various medical libraries. Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. Great news for those of us who use latex.
