LRF filetypes from this site...

Hi,
Occasionally I see some posts where a user posts a .LRF or .zip file with an .LRF file inside.

1- I wanted to know if the Sony PSR-505 is able to read them, or if they are encrypted files?

2- I also wanted to know if these files host the entire book in text format, or if it has lettertypes, sizes, and pictures inside?
I see most .LRF files range between 700kb and 4MB per file.

3- How do I upload them to the Sony PSR-505? Is there a special directory somewhere to put them,or do they need to be processed via some convertor?

Thank you.

I haven't put any LRF files from here on my Sony but here are my answers (Windows based because I use Windows):
(1) If someone posts an LRF on here I would expect the Sony to be able to read it without any problem
(2) Unless otherwise stated they will contain the whole book - including all required fonts and pictures
(3) Personally I use the Sony Library software that came with my reader (also available from the Sony site too). If you have your reader connected to your computer when running this software then you should be able to just drag the file from a Windows Explorer window onto the reader 'icon' on the left hand side of the Library window. Give it a few seconds to transfer and then 'eject' your reader using the little 'eject' icon next to the reader icon in the list.

When you next use your reader the file should be there, available to read.

I'm a geek, nerd, and techhead so I figured this out all on my own... I was actually very suprised that the instructions for day to day use of the Reader weren't included in a paper manual - however I believe there is a manual on the reader itself but I don't how useful that is.

Hope this helps,
Terry.

LRF files are eBook files formatted for the Sony Reader.

I see most .LRF files range between 700kb and 4MB per file.
It's a format which supports pictures, multiple fonts, proper formatting, etc.

When you connect a Sony Reader to the PC with a USB cable, it appears as an external disk driver on your PC. You just copy the files onto that drive using Windows Explorer (or whatever operating system you're using).

There is also the option to use the most excellent piece of software Calibre to transfer your .LRF files to your Sony reader.

The good thing about Calibre is that it is platform independent and works on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X without problems. It also contains a bunch of tools to convert other e-book formats too Sony's native LRF format and a Library function as well, designed to handle your library of E-books in an effective way.

You can read all about it in the Calibre forums

1- yes
2- yes
3- no conversion needed - connect reader, copy file,
or copy file to sd card,
or use Calibre,
or use Sony Library software,

thank you all for the quick replies!

Concerning my last question: Can I sort books in subdirectories (like Science Fiction, Biographies, Science, etc...); or are there pre-defined subdirectories to put the books in? or just place them on the root of the disk?

sorry for the many questions.. I'm on the virge of getting a 505 or 700,depending on if I find the extra $100 of the 700 justified enough...
So,I'm kind of excited already

You can sort them how you like and it'll locate them, but will still only show them as either lists by author/date/name - and by collections, if you set them up that way either via calibre or the Sony eBook Library software.

Yah, it's a constant annoyance. The "Collections" feature helps a fair bit on the point, but it's still aggravating.

For me, it is the single most desirable "feature" that's missing from the Reader. I'd kill for folder support.

Duly noted: for some it's more annoying than others.
