Now, can you give us some good recommendations for romance that does not include any cover that has a half-naked man, no cowboys, no Nascar, no construction workers. None of the books the frustrated housewife would read.

That is probably the most influential cover in the history of SF.
It led to the entire genre being derided as "that Buck Rogers stuff".
I've wondered what might've happened if the newspaper syndicate had licensed Skylark.
Would SF have been derided as "that Dick Seaton stuff??"
Somehow I can't quite imagine Queen singing about the crew of the Skylarks.

I've been subject of all sorts of snobbery and have been called all kinds of things, because I:

- Read fantasy ("That's just pulp.")
- Read Shakespeare ("Are you trying to be important?")
- Read most things in between ("Why read / waste time anyway?")
- Use DELL computers ("Not as hip as Apple.")
- Can write software and am good with computers ("Nerd.")
- Play Chess ("Nerd².")
- Play Go ("Nerd³.")
- Play RPG's / AD&D ("There is no word beyond Nerd for this.")
- Still enjoy some 15 year old computer games ("You're stuck in the past.")
- Play a Hammond organ. ("Cheesy." Until they hear Booker T. & the MG's...)
- Take pictures using a fully manual camera ("Why so difficult?")
- Don't use Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media. ("Anti-social idiot.")
- Want to be alone most of the time ("You've got a social disorder?")
- Do not have a girlfriend at this time ("You're afraid of women, or what?")
- Don't watch any TV except for documentaries and DVD's. ("That's just... moronic.")
- I listen to country music, organ music, new age, ambient, or even elevator music. ("WTF...")

And you know what? I don't f****** care.

I have my 8 hobbies or so to keep me busy beside working and stuyding (and have time for them because I don't do social media and don't watch brainless TV), and my ways have netted me (more than) enough money, without any debts, enough to do, and a quite uneventful lifestile without any surprises. And I never do anything unexpected.

In the end, I have no or only very few problems and can (almost) do whatever I want without having to pay responsibility to anyone or anything. And I like it that way.

If you don't like my reading habits, my other hobbies, or my very quiet, unproblematic and uneventful lifestyle, then you can just go away and get stressed out somewhere in a very busy place and cause yourself many problems, or something. It'll be more quiet for me then.

When I was in school (so many, many years ago), we had a "free read" period in English class where you could read whatever you wanted. So, I was reading the Ace paperbacks of Edgar Rice Burroughs with those marvelous covers by Roy Krenkel and Frank Frazetta. The English teacher came along, saw what I was reading, and threw an Archie comic book in front of me, saying, "Read that. It has more literary value."

I still remember reading an essay by Lin Carter (I think it was the foreward to the short story collection Beyond the Gates of Dream) in which he warned readers to stay away from "good" literature, because that stuff will rot your mind.

Book snobbery goes in all directions.

I love that one, too, especially since I can demonstrate the difference by navigating to my Sony's menu and selecting an example of the latter for comparison. "This? THIS is porn for women. Read that paragraph right there. See the difference?"

Not appropriate for all occasions, of course.

Was that a cut on Archie Comics? Just kidding

You are correct. That teacher's comment was out of line and not exactly encouraging for a young reader.

I have always just read what I like. Sometimes it is mainstream like Steven King or somtimes I like hidden gems that very few people ever read. No one can tell me what I should or should not read. I'm happy to take friendly recommendations, but scoff at a book that I'm reading and you will probably get ignored at best and kicked in the shin at worst It is the same with what I write. It is a personal thing and no one except you should decide what is worthwhile.

Keep reading whatever does it for you!

I just checked out the ebook from my local library. The book includes the discussion guide.

Thanks for the recommendation, Joykins!

That is such a old cover! Love Spell was known for their cheesy covers. When it went digital before Dorchester closed the cover got better...now it's self published it's lame pic of a woman blowing a kiss. Also this book is only 99 cents right now. I got it free when Dorchester was giving all the authors work away.

There isn't many super hero type romances. I can think of 3 series that's it. I wish more authors would tackle this theme because I would buy it. I grew up reading Marvel Comics. Big X-Men fan.

I read a wide variety of genres. The only genre I don't like is Romance. I have gotten snide comments from snobs but I don't care. Reading is very dear to me, I'm not going to let someone else dictate to me how I should enjoy it.

That's the one I get alot of too. I then tuned them out because they obviously have never read a romance book.

Beware, because it's true...

I had thought that the Elf portion would have been a little more tolkienesque, but then I have just recently re-read "A Christmas Carol"...
