New Version of Sony Reader Library?
I am told there is yet another new version due out next week (March 1-7 or so). I have not ever been able to get the software to install on my Windows 7 machine, no matter what I or Sony did (3 tech support reps, a product specialist, engineering, and 4 hours on the phone doing everything to make it work). They couldn't say if the new version would make it work, so I don't know what's in it. But it is due shortly.

I'm sure this is very frustrating for you but the Sony software really is compatible with Windows 7. I bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium on it last week. I had no trouble at all installing Sony Reader Library version 3.1.00.12040. I have to admit that as soon as I got the laptop I disabled all the fancy stuff Windows 7 does and made it run in 'classic' mode. It would be interesting to hear about other people's experiences. |

I've got Reader Library installed on three different computers running Windows 7. All run fine. So obviously, it is something you have installed that's mucking things up.

Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit on a MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. No problems with Sony Reader Library on either.
Stevet, Is your version of Win 7 32 or 64 bit? |

It loads on my MacBook but I can't resize the window to fit the screen, so I have to grab the entire window and move it to see what's on the left or right side of the window.

Which version?
From my quick search it appears Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise are the only versions that support WOW64, which is Windows on Windows 64. It is, essentially, 32 bit Windows XP on 64 bit Windows 7. There might be a problem with the driver that Sony Reader Library is installing, as in it being written for a 32 bit OS. http://www.techsupportalert.com/cont...plications.htm |

Windows Pro 7 x64. I can get the software to sort of install and run, but it's still unreliable crap. Crashes a lot. If I dare connect my reader while the software is open, it starts doing I don't know what to it, crashes the software *and* the reader.
I only have it installed for the occasional purchase from the Sony store. I buy and download them with the reader safely disconnected, then import them into Calibre which I use to put the book onto the reader. If you aren't interested in purchasing from the Sony store you have no need to install the software. Just use Calibre. -Marcy |

I think a key point here is that stating that your Windows 7 PC runs the Sony Reader Library does absolutely nothing to help those whose Windows 7 PCs don't run it. The world does not revolve around you and your lucky installation! Every PC is different, with different hardware, drivers, etc. Some of you have 32-bit PCs, others have 64-bit PCs. Some have this version of Windows 7 and others have one of he several other versions. There are too darn many variables for any of you to make a blanket, irresponsible statement that the Sony Reader Library works on Windows 7.
At best, it is buggie on Windows 7. At worst, it simply won't run. And when it does run it has the most god awful interface I've seen in a long time. The interface does not follow accepted Windows guidelines, and it appears to be written in Flash or some other equally deficient software environment. It is slow, buggie, suckie beyond reason, and Sony should be ashamed for turning out such crap. |

I think you are confusing WOW64 and XP Mode, which are two very different things.

Well, I'm sure you're right. I didn't invent the internet like Al Gore, and Windows 7 was not my idea. So you're right that it's just me, the rest of the world works great with Sony Reader Library. In fact, in spite of my new PC with the preinstalled Windows 7, I have messed up SOO badly that even product engineers at Sony can't save me, and after 4 of them working 4 hours or so they can't fix my problem. But again, all mine. I should make sure my pc has ONLY exactly what Sony wants to see, and not make pesky changes or install ANY other software. I mean, do we want them to go to all the trouble to make this software stable across a variety of environments??? Heck, maybe they should publish a reference architecture for what an Ideal Windows 7 installation looks like, and maybe have the mfrs lock it down so Sony Reader Library can work as intended?
I wonder how Sony puts up with people like me! |
