Honestly... This is getting pathetic... lots of people in many countries eat Horsemeat. I like raw horsemeat, horse sausage, etc... It's a mammal, it's dead. I eat it. I ate whale for New Year's Day and have tried Dolphin. Love the cultural views coming out in all this.

It's also the fact that as the source of the meat is unknown, given that it is not what it pupports to be, and could have been treated with substances not fit for the human food chain.

Yes, that is indeed an issue. It's been reported in the British media that horses are often treated with veterinary drugs which render the meat unfit for human consumption. These appear to be criminal issues; there's big money to be made. A documentary shown on the BBC a couple of weeks ago reported that one meat importer in France had made half a million Euros by buying 3 truckloads of horsemeat and selling it on as beef.

There appear to be at least two drugs given to horses that are highly dangerous to the human body even in small doses.
It might be questionable how small a dose is if the amount of horsemeat is in a one-digit percentage of 15% overall meat share in a lasagne, but it's at least an attempt to harm the consumers. |

Of course all the stores will rename their cheap "beef burgers" as "economy burgers", time to break out the magnifying glass to check the ingredients if your worried about burger species.
On a side note had a skippy burger the other day (kangaroo for those too old for 60's kids TV), tasted quite similar to horse |

Just to understand the relation: did they also inform how much an importer would earn with three truckloads of beef meat?

They were saying that the 47 tonnes of meat involved sold for half a million Euros more as beef than it would have sold for as horsemeat. There's big money involved in this business.

Puuh, obviously. I've always (wrongly) assumed that horse meat would be more expensive because it doesn't have a mass market like beef or pork but counts as something special here.
