Android users warned about public wifi data breach.

Not a good thing...

Quote:
Owners of Android smartphones are being warned to avoid public WiFi networks after researchers found a security flaw that could affect the vast majority of devices based on Google’s software.

A trio of researchers at Ulm University in Germany found that it was “quite easy” for hackers to intercept data from Google’s photo-sharing, calendar and contacts applications, as well as potentially other Google services such as Gmail, using a flaw that affects 99 per cent of all Android devices.

apparently it isn't an Android specific flaw, but the Apple biased media sure seemed to have led us to believe it was though.

"The story is getting a lot of attention because it was noticed on Android, but it’s not, in fact, an Android vulnerability. It’s a security bug in any program that does not encrypt its authorization tokens"

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/burnette/t...?tag=mncol;txt

and besides the Google already fixed theirs. But this can happen on any wifi device. Not Android specific.

You can always turn off the WiFi and GPS. Do let Google location pin point you on the map or to share your gmail account info with other vendors. Make sure you don't have your real name in the gmail account other wise you'll get mail saying "hey Joe Smith your not using your free text service on your Android phone (aka tablet). Guess what? Going to have to take away that number 505 999.9999 too those who use our service". Not much privacy there I say!

This is a vulnerability that was found in 2.2 and lower. Any device that has gingerbread and up has the fix.

However google has now implemented the solution on the server side so even the 2.2 and lower users are now protected.

Yes, it's a VERY good thing. It applies leverage to manufacturers to upgrade to GB 2.3.4!

you can just use simple logic. Look how much the mainstream tech media has downplayed the Malware threat to Mac's and compare it to the overblown coverage on the wifi thing, which has nothing to do with Android in specific. You would have thought everyone who owned an Android had their id stolen.

Just read the link I posted.

and where is the outrage Rock, from the mainstream tech media such as a David Pogue or a Walt Moss. etc on Apple telling it's employees not help out mac user's who have been infected with the latest Malware. They are taking the head in the sand approach. "if I don't hear it it doesn't exisit"

It's going to take 2nd tier internet blogs like Zdnet and other for them to acknowledge it

but yet this is the company you idolize.

MS doesn't do malware removal assistance over the phone either, and they are the biggest OS vendor on the planet.

you sure about that?

This is atrocious. Even Microsoft, which has a long history of operating system exploits and malware issues, has acknowledged the problems and even provides anti-malware protection for free, as well as providing online and phone support for security issues.

besides they aren't even acknowlging the problem exisits? HOLY CRAP man, you can't be serious.

You iFans are funny, Apple could put out a product that is known to cause cancer yet you guys will defend them to the end.

So for communion do you guys use Apple juice and sliced apple in place of the wine and bread?

Oh, and nice job of saying "no, look over there!" in a thread about Androids security problems.
