(Kindle)Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction for $2.99

It looks interesting though I don't know how fast a person can get through a file some 12 mb in size on the Kindle.

We have that right here on Mobile Read. Individual books, mind you, but free.

We also have it here in three zip files:

The Amazon item is all fiction. The MR collection is a lot of non fiction as well, and is several times larger than Amazon's 12 MB.

Is the amazon thing a subset, or a different collection?

Those are the Harvard Classics. These are the Shelf of Fiction which is a companion set of books. While we do have some of the Shelf of Fiction here at MR I am not so sure we have all of them.
Both are listed here. First the Classics then the Shelf of Fiction below that.

Here's what comprises the Shelf of Fiction in case anyone's interested...

Quote:
* Vols. 1 & 2: The History of Tom Jones, by Henry Fielding
* Vol. 3: A Sentimental Journey, by Laurence Sterne; Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
* Vol. 4: Guy Mannering, by Sir Walter Scott
* Vol. 5 & 6: Vanity Fair, by William Makepeace Thackeray
* Vols. 7 & 8: David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens
* Vol. 9: The Mill on the Floss, by George Eliot
* Vol. 10: The Scarlet Letter & Rappaccini's Daughter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne; Rip Van Winkle & The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving; Three Short Stories, by Edgar Allan Poe; Three Short Stories, by Francis Bret Harte; Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog, by Samuel L. Clemens; The Man Without a Country, by Edward Everett Hale
* Vol. 11: The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James
* Vol. 12: Notre Dame de Paris, by Victor Marie Hugo
* Vol. 13: Old Goriot, by Honoré de Balzac; The Devil's Pool, by George Sand; The Story of a White Blackbird, by Alfred de Musset; Five Short Stories, by Alphonse Daudet; Two Short Stories, by Guy de Maupassant
* Vols. 14 & 15: Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship & The Sorrows of Werther, by J. W. von Goethe; The Banner of the Upright Seven, by Gottfried Keller; The Rider on the White Horse, by Theodor Storm; Trials and Tribulations, by Theodor Fontane
* Vols. 16 & 17: Anna Karenina & Ivan the Fool, by Leo Tolstoy
* Vol. 18: Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoevsky
* Vol. 19: A House of Gentlefolk & Fathers and Children, by Ivan Turgenev
* Vol. 20: Pepita Jimenez, by Juan Valera; A Happy Boy, by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson; Skipper Worse, by Alexander L. Kielland
No idea what all's in the collection on Amazon, but it must be more than just the Shelf of Fiction.

The history of Tom Jones?
Is that a very rare book?

Answer: It's not unusual.

I stand corrected. Well, here's what we have (Mobi links where available since the OP is for a Kindle product):
  1. Tom Jones by Henry Fielding
  2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  3. Guy Mannering by Sir Walter Scott
  4. Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray
  5. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
  6. The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot
  7. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
  8. Rappacini's Daughter in Mosses from an Old Manse by Nathaniel Hawthorne
  9. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving (LRF)
  10. Omnibus of works by Edgar Allan Poe which should contain the three short stories
  11. Selected stories of Francis Bret Harte which will probably contain the three short stories
  12. Jim Smily and His Jumping Frog by Samuel L. Clemens aka Mark Twain (IMP, but bilingual)
  13. Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
  14. Notre Dame de Paris aka The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo
  15. Old Goriot by Honoré de Balzac
  16. The Devil's Pool by George Sand
  17. Letters from My Windmill collection by Alphonse Daudet which may contain the five short stories
  18. Volumes 1, 2, 3 of short stories by Guy de Maupassant which should centainly contain the two short stories
  19. The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (LRF)
  20. The Rider on the White Horse by Theodor Storm (ePub)
  21. Anna Karenina
  22. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (LRF)
  23. A House of Gentlefolk and Fathers and Children by Ivan Turgenev
  24. A Happy Boy by Björnstorne Björnson
Here's what we're missing at PG or via Bartleby, in case anyone wants to give it a go, tidying up and adding a hand-formatted version to MR:
  1. A Sentimental Journey Through France and England by Laurence Sterne
  2. Rip van Winkle in The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon by Washington Irving
  3. The Man Without a Country by Edward Everett Hale
  4. The Story of a White Blackbird by Alfred de Musset (not available in English via PG)
  5. Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (I think we have this in German, not available in English via PG)
  6. The Banner of the Upright Seven by Gottfried Keller (we may have this in German; not available in English via PG)
  7. Trials and Tribulations by Theodor Fontane (may have this in German, not available in English via PG)
  8. Ivan the Fool by Leo Tolstoy
  9. Pepita Jimenez by Juan Valera (not available in English via PG)
  10. Skipper Worse by Alexander l. Kielland (we have this in Norwegian, not available in English via PG)
Incidentally, here's PG's own particular listing page for their versions of the complete set of Harvard Classics, fiction and non-.

Interesting. I didn't realize we had so many of the Shelf of Fiction books here already. Either way probably has some pros and cons though I imagine. I have no idea how well the links (I assume there are some) in the Amazon version work and I assume at some 12 mb it might take a little longer to download to Kindle than the average book which is in a lot of cases under 1 mb in size. On the other hand you are supposed to get all the books/stories in one file so you don't have to search the whole Kindle to find them. And that's a lot of books for just $2.99 as well. I downloaded the sample to my Kindle (haven't opened it yet) so I can't say which (the pros or cons) is better at the moment.

ATDrake, +

I was wondering if it was worth getting as I already have some of the works on there, and there's also more than a few I'm not interested in reading. The links you provided are very helpful; thanks for the hard work - it's appreciated

The sample seems to be comprised solely of the 1st book, Tom Jones, which makes sense I guess since it is a very long book.
