Apple hasn't engaged in the race to the bottom to grab market share grab that Android and PC makers have had to in order to compete. As a result Apple has relatively low market share, but makes a huge portion of the profits. The last numbers I saw gave Apple 6.4% of the smartphone handset market, and 71% of the profit. Hard to argue with the business model.

Actually, I think Apple does way overcharge. Their products are not truly premium in any fashion. They have been able to brainwash Applephiles into believing they are, but they are not better products and they certainly are not worth the premium amount Apple charges for them. Their products are more artsy-fartsy than anything else, and that is a big difference from being truly premium. It takes a lot more than simply looking pretty to be considered premium. The truth is you get a lot more bang for your buck with non-Apple products. The iPhone is a prime example. They are on version 4s already and the darn thing still cannot consistently hold a call without dropping it, usually several times if it is a long call. The iPod touch is on its 4th generation, yet the darn thing bleeds out its battery charge in 2 to 3 hours. I could go on and on...

What people pay are not just the devices. Heck, if specs were the only thing that mattered, Apple would be long gone. What people pay here also includes the Apple ecosystem, and the exclusive App Store. Not to mention the status symbol of being rich or fancy.

If you live in the US, not even. The iPhone is fairly commonplace now particularly since upfront cost has dropped to free or $100 for older models. You're forced to pay for data on traditional plans with any smartphone anyway so all things considered, there wouldn't be a huge gap in TCO between Android and iPhone.

Sorry, I was referring to my country. Here it is still quite a status symbol. It's like "Ooooooh! you have an iPhone!"
but then,
"oh, that's an Android..."

Slowly, Android is getting the same reputation as Nokia did way back in the day.

Apple won't do it, 3G is where it makes money with its carrier pals.

I know. Instead, they release a crippled version called the iPod touch.

In all fairness, the iPod touch is a pretty good and cheaper alternative to those who want to keep Android as a phone and have a media player slash game portal in iOS.

That may be, but not everyone wants that. There are many people who want the features of a smartphone, but don't want to pay for forced data plans or pay for overpriced unlocked phones.

For me, either Android or iOS would work; if the device supported the apps I need. The problem with the iPod touch is its lack of hardware features compared to those of the Galaxy Player. Lack of GPS, compass, card slot, FM radio, and 2-3+ MP AF cam prevent me from using the iPt4 outside the home.

The iPod touch is a great audio player because of the availability of inexpensive speaker docks, but only because of that. If inexpensive speaker docks existed for the Galaxy Player line, I'd ditch iOS.

This

Something that comes very frustrating for me as both an iOS and Android user is that it seems accessories are always hard to find for Android devices. even the popular Samsung devices have quite a bit of issue with regards to their lack of accessories. It took me so long to get a proper case for the Galaxy Tab before, and looking around, Capdase doesn't even have a case for the Galaxy S3 yet. Not to mention docks as you said. There are virtually none. Its like they sell only 5 or less keyboard docks per store here with some of the stores having none at all.

sorry. I'm kinda ranting about it, but we see the issue. There is just so much "aftermarket" when it regards to iOS, with so little when it comes to Android devices.

Android and iOS smartphone-like portable players already exist. It just so happens that the iOS version (iPod Touch) is very crippled compared to its older sibling while Android players suffer from a lack of popularity (ergo, not a lot of aftermarket accessories). I reckon the issue of lack of accessories will change if Google ever decides to release a 4-5" version of the Asus Nexus 7 or a Samsung Galaxy Nexus sans 3G radio. Still, the Galaxy Nexus is very reasonably priced already ($350 brand new direct from Google). I reckon sooner rather than later, no-contract, factory unlocked smartphone prices (Android at least) will drop to such a level that there'd be little reason for devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Player to exist. How much does cellular hardware add to the BOM? Less than $10?
