The Quicksilver Horse by Anne Digby, a tween/YA novel originally out from Granada/HarperCollins in 1979. Anne Digby's enthralling story of horsemanship and a bittersweet boy-girl friendship in the 1970s is set against a circus and racing stables background. ETA: free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: Almost Kings by Max Doty, a YA novel which the eponymous 2010 film (IMDB) was based upon. The original novel that inspired the award-winning film, Almost Kings is a gritty, powerful story of the choices that bring two brothers together and tear them apart. With their father lost in anger and self-loathing, James "Truck" Wheeler has raised his younger brother Ted as best as he could, considering he's just a teenager himself. In return, Ted idolizes his brother. Now, during their one year of high school together, Ted will realize there are troubling aspects to Truck and his friends, The Kings. When the boys assign numbers to each girl at school and begin a dark contest, Ted will be caught playing a game that targets his best friends, including the girl he loves: Kallea Whitney. King's Death Garden by Ann Halam, a pseudonym of Arthur C. Clarke & Philip K. Dick Award-winner Gwyneth Jones (ISFDB, Wikipedia), 1st in her Ghosts and Other Hauntings series tween/YA urban sf/fantasy/horror tales originally out from Orchard Books/Penguin in 1986. Some of Jones' other "Ann Halam" fantasies were still on the school library bookshelf when I was a kid and directly contributed to the formation of my lifelong speculative fiction reading habit. Maurice's family has left for the Middle East: Maurice: asthmatic, plagued by allergies, self-centred, impossible semi-invalid, is sent to live with his great aunt in Brighton, and become fascinated by the beautiful old cemetery next door. Isolated from the real world around him, he's playing a dangerous game with the "strange scientific phenomena" he encounters in there, but despite some alarming warnings, hinting at where he's heading, he just can't stay away. Nimrod by "Ann Halam", 6th in the series and originally out from Dolphin/Orion Books in 1999 under the title The N.I.M.R.O.D. Conspiracy. Stacey vanished three years ago. Alan knows she's dead: he knows what happened because it was all his fault. But his mother refuses to believe it. Mum's endless, hopeless search for her baby, her lost little daughter, is the worst misery of Alan's life-after-Stacey. Going nowhere, filling shelves; seeing his dead little sister' ghost. Then Mum discovers NIMROD, the psychic missing persons agency. These people claim they can pluck messages from lost souls (living or dead) from the aether, and convert them into text on a computer screen. They're just another bunch of callous chancers, as far as Alan's concerned. But Mum's convinced, so Alan gets drawn in. The search for Stacy becomes Alan's search for the truth about NIMROD, and leads him into a bewildering underworld of James Bond gadgets, luxury yachts, conspiracy, blackmail; secret safe houses in the backstreets of his seaside town; and even aliens from outer space. Who are these people? They've got to be faking their "Stacey" messages, but how can they know what they know? And if they're crooks, why don't they go after someone with money? What can they have to gain from targetting Alan and his Mum? Last edited by ATDrake; 09-20-2014 at 12:10 PM. |

The Perdou Painting & Stepping Stones Mystery by Anne Digby, who has a lot of St. Martin's Press paperbacks from the 80s-90s (and we previously received another HarperCollins backlist novel of hers upthread). These are continuations of her tween Jill Robinson Adventure series, which started with another novel that came out from Penguin's Puffin imprint in 1990. When an old French oil painting goes missing from Haven's grandest house, Jill has no idea of the crisis it will cause in the Robinson family. With her big sister Sarah's future at stake, she has no option but to confide in her best friend Lindy. The mystery of the Perdou painting is a troubling one and together they must try to solve it... & Jill and Lindy love the idea of Haven Youth Club's summer holiday project. They're going to try to build a river crossing at the Stepping Stones bend. However, Club is deeply divided on the issue and so are members of the Robinson family, especially young Tony. Feelings are running very high....but surely not high enough to lead to sabotage? |

Emma Learns to Sprout (children's book about nutrition) (Picture Book for Preschool) (Ages 3-8)by Shir Guez Quote:
I received a notification from the author that this book was going to be on special during the dates above. I have not read the book in it's entirety, but did read through the sample. It seemed cute, especially for parents/grandparents trying to get little ones to eat healthier and/or interested in gardening/science. I am in no way affiliated with the Author. |

Destiny's Hourglass by Nic Tatano, a YA sf/fantasy psychic teen vs. older evil adult in a battle to save the world kind of adventure thriller. Tatano is a HarperCollins HarperImpulse author, and her similar YA female-heroined romance-inclined version of such from them, The Adventures of Jillian Spectre is still free for the US, so if you liked that, you might want to try this. Seventeen-year-old Riley Jamison has always wondered why he could predict the future. Turns out he’s not predicting it, he’s changing it with his thoughts. Now he’s in demand by the forces of both good and evil. Riley must now develop his talents at The Compass, a school run by The Guardians, a benevolent group committed to changing the future for the better. And since Riley’s powers are off the charts, he must resist the biggest temptation. To play God. But changing the future is not without risks.... any action creates “ripples” in the timeline, which can be good or catastrophic. Riley is also confronted with a rogue Guardian who wants to manipulate the future for his own benefit... and let the ripples fall where they may. |

Horseman & Drowned by Christopher Golden (ISFDB, Wikipedia) & Ford Lytle Gilmore, 1st & 2nd in their Sleepy Hollow High series of YA paranormal/horror suspense/adventure tales based on the classic Washington Irving tale. Golden is a much-published sfnal TV tie-in writer, probably best known for his extensive Buffy: The Vampire Slayer novels, and these two titles originally came out from small press Razorbill in 2005, according to ISFDB. Everyone’s heard the rumors about Sleepy Hollow, but no one living has heard the truth. Shane and Aimee Lancaster are headed to a new life in Sleepy Hollow, New York, whether they like it or not. Prompted by the death of their mother, their father has decided that a few bad choices on the part of his children mean a new life in a smaller place with less crime and, hopefully, fewer bad influences. But sometimes the best ideas bring about the worst results. Last edited by ATDrake; 10-09-2014 at 02:22 PM. Reason: Fix link to actually go to all of Golden's current available freebies like it was meant to. |
