Interesting idea. The characters won't wear out, the the keyboard could be instantly transformed into any desired layout.

but really, all seem to miss the point: I don't want to type on a mobile device, aside perhaps from a numeric keyboard or other simple large buttons.

Best thing I've ever seen for writing on mobile devices is Swype. You just connect the letters on a virtual keyboard by swiping over them with your finger to form words. Although invented by Samsung, they seem to have completely ditched it in favor of plain old writing with a stylus on the Galaxy Note. It's wrong: first, because writing on it is extremely laggy; second, because I don't want to draw the individual letters, just want to connect them from a keyboard. I love the stylus for this purpose, but I'm not going back to drawing characters.

I need this for gaming. pasting little pieces of paper on my keys to correspond to hit, power menu, shot gun, etc, is not optimal.

Haha that was my first thought! "I could mark my hotkeys!" I try to change key assignments so that my games are as similar as possible, but I still get tripped up sometimes.

It would be useful for more than just gaming. Applications could have custom keyboard layouts. No need to remember what F11 does, they keyboard could be updated to have the key display it.

That looks like a really neat idea. I could see lots of potential applications if there was any decent amount of resolution for each key.

Now that is an awesome idea! Is Run F5 or F6 in this program? What's the hot key for esoteric engineering application #47?

Since not everyone likes the same thing in a keyboard, though, I'd hope there'd be a choice of (clear) keycaps of different shapes (flat or concave) and a choice of tactile response and keyclick sound.
