Does spam come in cycles?
Do spammers come in streaks? Lately I've noticed an apparent upswing in the number of spam postings around here. Is it a moon phase thing or just that in winter people have more time to try to fill boards like MR with that junk?

Every so often some spammers find a way around the automated checks and go on a spamming spree.

And, of course, once a spammer gets in, he's not going to leave just one post!

With a lot of help from the other mods. HarryT, in particular, is very good at exterminating spam.

This site is arguably among the best (if not the best) at eradicating spam, I commend y'all for that. I've seen sites that are unmoderated and the majority of the posts are spam. I don't return to those sites. The latest spam attack took place in very late evening in the U.S. (which would have been very early morning in the UK) and there was likely few moderators online. That gave the "Russian Call Girl" spammers a bit longer to advertise their "services," I suspect. At any rate, I'd be wary of "Russian Call Girls." With my luck, I'd get an FSB hussy armed with a bumbershoot weaponized with polonium-210. Then I'd probably be imprisoned on a god-forsaken island populated with numbered nincompoops. True enough TimW. It never stays long here. Whether the mods notice it or someone reports it to them it's gone very quickly.

Ah. Progress marches on huh pdurrant. Someone is always coming up with new ways to make computers do things they aught not to and then someone has to work out a way to fix the hole that shouldn't have needed patching. Good to hear that it's been patched though.

Generally it comes in cans, but single slices can be found in foil packaging...
