Though his science is dated I agree it is a good story. The first time I read the book I had bought a copy of the paperback (I think from the local libraries used book sale) I was in my teens as I recall and the story caught my interest. It wasn't til a long time later that I found other works by him. One of the wonders of the net.

I've had it for a while but haven't read it yet. Though the science is dated, does that detract from the story too much? I guess what I'm asking is - is it just pulp fiction or is there enough in there to still make it worthwhile?

Yep, just as the fact that Martian Chronicles by Bradbury is still a good read even though we know there are no martians City at World's End is still very readable.
