Qualcomm Smartbooks this fall

Two very interesting links:

http://jkontherun.com/2009/05/30/wha...er-to-succeed/

http://www.hellosmartbook.com/index.html

Why this might be a darned good ebook reader if they got it right would be:
  • Released this fall - can directly compete with launch of bebook 2, next sony etc on a direct price comparison
  • price - may well be less than current netbooks - see jkk's view
  • screen designed to be used outdoors/ in sunlight - see video
  • operating system should be instant on
  • should be very simple to use
  • multifunctional - ie web, documents, gps etc unlike a dedicated reader
  • should have options on format including touchscreen tablet
  • all day battery life
  • could probably be able to port fbreader and calibre

This may never happen of course but it's one of those things that if they got right........

There will be several form factors (just like viliv are doing) so yes some will be in laptop form and others will be in slate form.

It's the slate form that interests me.

I see it does emailing, GPS, mp3, 3 d graphics, video conference. "Alway connected web browsing"....that means you are paying a monthly fee to some cell phone company.

Cute little netbook, not reader........

Didn't see anyone reading on it......

Is there a link for the 'slate' versions?

Let's wait to see what they show off at computex this week. If there's no touchscreen slate there, then it won't be in the shops in September.

Re reading apps, all that needs is one ounce of imagination. If it's running any form of linux (which it will) then it's already an e-reader. Don't worry, if they want to target the ereading market they'll make it clear in big, bold letters that it can be used to read books. Also, if it's going to be able to let you read and edit your office documents it's not much of a leap from there.
